Turbo Questions

i was comparing a 1'st gen with a model a/t... figuratively (a model T was an old slow car in the '50s.. they were souped up, and a first gen now is an old slow vehicle, which could be souped up as well)

what's with everybody being so negative? not everybody elses project has to be you're vision of "the best idea ever" if you're not into it whats even the point of saying you don't like it, and then constantly arguing about it's not in you're taste, etc?

and by the way, whats wrong with a turbo station wagon? why does a car have to be a muscle car, or import sports car to be applicable for horsepower related engine modification? are there some kind of guidelines here that i don't know about?

i do agree that it's probably not a good idea for the OP to buy the turbo, but only because it will probably end is disaster/failure and loss of money due to his lack of skill, if he were a more experienced mechanic, then i would think it's a good idea (if its a project hes interested in)

Omg, it's like talking to the wall....
READING COMPREHENSION... I give up.

Well maybe , But how often do you pull up to another first gen explorer and race? If that explorers driver would even be the racing type?

As for technical achievement , sure but 1,000 is one expensive achievement. And the turbo may sound cool but if it talks the talk (makes noise)and can't walk the walk (go fast) then nobody's going to respect it.

And granted a honda or escape wouldn't make a good off road car. But 1,000 could go toward something even better then an explorer like a full sized v8 truck or so on.

fair enough, and yes a v8 truck would be an easier mod, but my current project is a first gen explorer, it'll be a supercharged mustang v6. (mentioned earlier) the reason for that is it'll eat less gas then the 6.8L stroker v8 bronco i already have (9 to 10mpg). therefore, I'll be able to drive to further places to off-road it (i'm hoping for at least 18 freeway mpg) it's only going to have about 225 horsepower, but that's should do OK with good suspension etc.

By the time you get that turbo kit on and working properly and tuned. I would be willing to bet you'll have over $4500-$5000 invested in it. And i know it will be unique and different. But you'll still have a 4.0 explorer...i mean, i know everyone has their own little preferences of cool and such. But IMHO i would do a 5.0 swap with a 5 speed. Put some bolt-ons on that and you'll be around 270hp and well over 300ft lbs of torque. Way more power that that turbo'd 4.0. Much less mantinence. Plus you'll have the benifit of a huge aftermarket parts supply, cheap mods, gobs of info about the engine everywhere you look and the benefit of having one of the most durable and reliable power plants out there... and it'll get around 15-20 mpg on the highway depending on your mods/tune and driving habits. Read up on mustang forums about the 15-20mpg if you dont believe me. I know you said the whole 4.0 turbo being different...but i dont know a helluva lot of people running around with 5.0 first gen explorers either. ;)

Thats just me though.

go nos,you can get the same power for half price and takes less than an hour to hook up!!

i know a 5.0 would be cool.. so would a variety of other engines. im not sure a 5.0 would get that good mpg in a big wind plow though.. a mustang is a little lighter and more aerodynamic.. a 4.6 mod engine on the other hand might do as well as the stock v6 gas milage wise though. they are quite efficient.

would probably last half way through the first spray and blow head gaskets. especially if there was a lean condition, throttle was let up etc.

We still have not gotten an update from the original poster about what it is they are wanting to accomplish.

If he's wanting to go turbo to be original, I'd start first building up the engine and tranny to handle the turbo. As for that Ebay turbo kit he referenced, I wouldn't touch that with a 10ft pole. For that price you might as well pickup a kit from a known company that will stand behind the product.

realistically, one of the roots style supercharger kits made for this engine would be the way to go.

I agree, I don't think the 4.0 has a high enuff rpm range to take full advantage of the turbo. If he's looking for something to just tinker with, I'd go pickup one of those turbo charged ford Probes from years back. I see them at the junkyard all the time. It would take some major mod and fab, but if it cranks enuff air, it just might work. And he could probably get the whole engine for under $300.

I don't exactly know what I am trying to accomplish. It was just an idea. I think mostly I'm just trying to imagine what can be done with what I have. I've put an IFAB.net intake on it, I've got a flowmaster exhaust on the way with new headers, I dropped 2 grand on the stereo and I'm thinking about throwing a chip on the computer once everything is said and done. I'm just going down the line looking at what I can improve. Sorry for snapping at people giving advice but all I saw was negative negative negative. :salute:

dont do a chip they dont work.do maf swap from a gt mustang.look into underdrive pulleys and efan first.:salute:

I'm not sure what an "efan" is. Is that "Engine Fan"? :salute:

yea get ride of the one that runs off the motor and put and electric fan in

lower gear ratios would give it a little more kick too, something around 4.56, even with stock size tires.

i agree that a chip is not a good idea. likely just cause problems. oh, and stick with stock thermostat temperature.

exhaust was a great start. sounds like you're doing a pretty good job w/ this ex, how about some pictures?

btw electric fans are a matter of preference, but i dont really like them. a clutch fan with a properly working clutch will cool the engine much better, use the same average power, and wont rob power at high rpm/full throttle (the clutches job is to let it spin freely at those rpm levels)

Here are some snaps of the intake; I'll post pics of the exhaust and headers when it gets done on November 2nd.

sorry to rain on you're parade, but think about that intake for a minute.. remember cold air = horsepower.. but that is not really a cold air intake (it sucks air directly from around the filter inside the engine compartment) where as the stock air box actually was a cold air intake, it had a duct from the bottom which went forward to the grille, so intake air was cold (except during warm up when it used the heat pipe) i would probably switch back to the stock air box.. the chrome tubing looks cool though. as does the stereo equipment. freakin huge sub.

personally i'd focus more on things like the stereo etc, (aka not related to handling or acceleration) just because the explorer isn't really a very easily modable, or fast vehicle.. yet it offers a lot in other ways (fit a big stereo for example, and the fairly quiet ride makes a nice stereo nice) i recently upgraded the stereo in my '93, not quite as extravagent as you're stereo upgrades, but not bad, i just did some JBL speakers, and a clarion cd/mp3 head unit.. sub is next.

Yeah we were brainstorming around that very issue and thinking about how we could position it so it is in fact a cold air intake. I will definentally be heat wrapping the new headers to cut down on heat in the campartment but that can only go so far. I'll think of something...I've already got the stereo, the tires and rims, the exhaust, an "Air Intake", 210 amp alternator, Optima battery...I'm running out of Ideas!

Well considering 90% of the air entering you're engine compartment goes through you're radiator, it's always going to be a warm place. If you're good with fabrication, i bet you could fab up a plastic box (maybe out of thick plexiglass or something) and use some dryer hose to duct it to behind the grille... that'd give you a ton of potential air volume, and cold air too.
