I've been reading through the audio forum for the last couple of hours. I can't seem to find a definitive answer about the 3rd Gen Audiophile sub and amp.

I believe that the set up is 4 ohm, 85w for the sub amp (please correct me if this is wrong). What I can't find is info about the actual sub itself. Is it a dual voice coil or single? I would like to go and get a direct drop in replacement for the factory speaker. I don't want to overload anything and cause damage/fires.

I have already replaced the HU and now want to replace the sub and speakers. The Audiophile may be "Premium" sound over the base system, but its far from premium. The new JVC has been a great start but there is still room for improvement.

Maybe this is an easier way to put it- I have a single voice coil 4 ohm subwoofer. Can I install that to replace the factory unit without blowing something?

I have the same question. I'm replacing the stock speakers including the stock sub. I have purchased a JL Audio 8W0 sub which I understand is a direct replacement but I'd like confirmation. My Explorer is a 2010 Limited.

Is your JL 4ohm single voice coil?

The JL 8W0 I purchased is a SVC 4 Ohm sub. I do not think I have the "Audiophile" system. I believe I have the "Premium" system. I would think that if I had the "Audiophile" system it would be an upcharge listed on my Window Sticker and it is not listed.

The Audiophile Subwoofer is a 8” 2ohmX2ohm and 45wX45w in a .5cuft enclosure, its only feed is a +/- single source, so it must be bridged amp?

might help?

Hey, thanks for the link. I read that Saturday when I started seriously thinking it was time for change. Very good thread, and very informative. I definately like what you've done with your system. The 2x2 and 45x45 was a bit confusing however. I'm confused as to what that means. Does 2x2=4 ohms and 45x45=90w? I ran that by a friend who is way more into this than me and he didn't know either. Its one amp and one speaker so I don't know why its listed as it is. Where were you able to find that info?

I found a thread that listed a bunch of info that was good up until 2001. Not sure if that carried forward to the 3rd Gens and newer.

So,if 2x2=4 and 45x45, and the JL is a supposed 'drop in' replacement, in theory any low power, svc 4 ohm should work, right? And for air volume purposes, could the stock enclosure not be ported to allow more airflow for a bigger sub?

yep, thats 2ohm x 2ohm and 45watts x 45watts.
There are two set of leads on the speaker, amp has 4 wires coming out. BUT the amp only gets one set of inputs, so it must be bridged in the amp.

SVC 4ohm should work, you would just combine the wires?

Don't know on porting . . .i was looking for more accurate bass which i thought was sealed. . .

I'm still confused. when you say 2x2 I assume the factory sub is a DVC. I did not think you could use a SVC sub if the original was a DVC sub. What am I missing?

its a dual voice coil setup.

Good question, i'd try and let the smoke genie out and just wire the two leads together. .. ..lol. . .but wouldn't that be the same as 'bridged'

I wound up getting a new amp and svc.. . .

Thanks JR. I'm pretty sure the amp will not be happy just putting the leads together. I may try the positive from one set of outputs and the negative from the other and see how the amp likes being put into "bridged" mode. If not I may just need to buy an amp.

How did you wire the new amp?Did you just pull the Line in going into the factory amp or did you replace the HU and run all new leads?

I have 3 other cars that I basically gutted in order to replace the entire system but I swore I would not do that to the Ex especially since it is only a month old and I sprung for the NAV so I wouldn't have to gut it. I'm not looking to win any SPL contests just hoping to make the current system sound better at low to mid volumes.

Thanks for your help!

jrford, THANK YOU for that last pic!! It's good to see whats in there. I too am not looking for competition grade audio, just something better than what Ford calls "Premium" or "Audiophile'. So it looks like a DVC sub is the direct fit replacement....

Now I'm thinking of going with the Kicker 10CVR84. It is a DVC, 4 Ohm 8" sub that is 4.25 deep. Will this fit depth wise does anyone know?

Hmmmm, I guess knowing the depth would be a BIG help too wouldn't it?? :biggthump

So, can we safely assume a DVC 4 ohm 8" shallow mount will be a direct replacement?

Absolutely! The JL is 4.063 and we know from that other thread that it fits but will this one I wonder? I also found a Dayton NS210-44 8 that is DVC and that is only 2.5" deep and looks like a good match to the factory enclosure.

Now I need to sell my JL 8W0 before it even arrives. I got a great deal on it but it's non returnable unless defective :(

Time to call my buddy at Best Buy and see what staff costs are on various subs.........may as well get new 6x8's for the doors while I'm at it. :D

New JVC XR-KW810 and all new speakers plus the Sirius Sat and iPod control through the deck, now thats 'Premium'.....just need to get the steering wheel control adapter now. ;)

Here is what I purchased for the doors. I got 4 of these on the way.

I doubt Best Buy carries the Dayton. They porbably have Kickers though.
I think I'm leaning towards the Dayton now since I'm betting the 8W0 is not going to work properly. Depth will not be an issue but mounting hole may be. I'll compare the 7.362" Dayton mounting hole with the JL...

The Dayton requires a 7.362" hole. The JL requires a 7" cutout. The kicker only requires a 6 7/8" cutout but may be too deep at 4.25". jrford, could you possibly measure the factory sub you removed if you still have it? I'm ready to pull the trigger on the Dayton but would prefer not to have to enlarge the hole in the factory enclosure.
Thanks!

Where did you get the JL's? They look nice.

Sonixelectronics.com Not "JL authorized" but they have a great return policy for defective items and if a driver isin't blown initially it most likely won't fail unless you over/under power it. I have been using Sonixelectronics for a while and they are great to deal with. Here is a recent install in my "weekend toy" that I completed last year with almost all Sonix parts...

My buddy and I did this over two weekends last year. My car was only 6 months old and we gutted it.
