99 V8 question

I agree- you can find a GT40 powerplant without looking very hard, for less money that's already pulled out of the truck...

This guy wants it out of his yard, he'll tell you anything to get rid of it. With the labor involved in pulling it, and the logistics involved in getting it home, I'd say it's worth $10. :)

around here a junkyard will come and tow your junk away and pay $175.00 and up - I don't know about out there.

Thanks guys, he also reckons it's got all new brakes and new tires.... I might offer him $200 and see what he says... I know he's in a desperate hurry to sell it as he's going back to England..

I think it would be worth it for all the wiring that some one at a junk yard hasnt messed up. Well maybe for 400 dollars or so.

I need the engine bay wiring, the tranny, the back window, the tail lights, the rear leaf springs and other sundries in the engine bay, plus it'll have locks n keys, which I also need.

I can then sell the rear diff, the wheels/tires and anything else I don't need to offset the cost of buying/collecting it, hopefully making enough in the process to find a decent engine

most of you have to remember this. up here in canada, the v8 explorers where sold, but not as many as the us. in the last 3 years, some members here know i have been looking hard for one, and with not much luck. i have seen 3 that where at a insurance auction near by (the cheapest one went for $400, and the most expensive one was $1500), i have seen one at the wreckers, and 2 for sale that where road worthy. will he take a chance on the motor being good? sure, but at the same time, if the motor is bad, he can always get a short block, and be on his way, and he will have all the necessary parts to complete his swap.
simon, if you get it for $400, i think you stole it! even if you have a 16 hour round trip.

well, I've gotta see what Friday brings.. then I'll let him sweat for a bit... and then see what happens. I've also found another 99 sport not far from this V8 that the owner's willing to deal on. So if poss, might pick up both of them, sell what I don't need and that should cover me for pretty much everything...

True, there are a lot more V8's down here... But yeah- if you are needing all of that stuff and hot just the engine, I think I'll revise to agree with Tim, especially if you can sell the other parts... I think I was incorrectly thinking that you only wanted the motor.

Well, I'll give him a call this weekend and see what he has to say.... Just got some good news about some cash coming my way, but I don't wanna give him it all!! haha

Okay so say you spend 1.75k to get this engine rebuilt and swapped over to your Sport (that includes the 16 hr drive cost, the cost of the vehicle, and however you are going to transport the vehicle). It seems like you could save that money and in the near future and for not much more money, you can probably get a running v8 explorer. I mean dont get me wrong, I'm hope that your plans comes through - but if it were me, I would wait for a running v8 explorer and sell your Sport (assuming your Sport is running).

Every V8 sport I've seen lately has been upwards of $4k.... there's never a cheap one floating about that's any good... I also want to keep it 99 or newer for the wiring and returnless fuel system etc....

V8 Sport

Some people like their Sport so much that they are willing to endure the cost and effort required to upgrade to a V8 with the 4R70W transmission. I plan to be one of those people.

Si, you are talented enough that you could rebuild the V8 and then perform a double powertrain swap. After the swap, you could sell the fully functional 4 door for enough more than you paid for it to cover the cost of the V8 engine rebuild and the driveshaft changes. My concern would be that the 97 will not have PATS while your 99 does. Even if you eliminate PATS on your 99 there will be wiring complications. I believe there were significant wiring changes in 98. Also, the 97 has a return fuel system while your 99 has a returnless system. I think you would be better off waiting for a 99 or 2000 4 door with V8.

I can use the pats from this 99 on mine, seeing as my sport was a stolen recovered jobbie... and has no keys/locks.... so I'll be using the locks n keys from this one plus the pats etc... also, I have no engine (see pickle registry in sig) - my sport is a rolling shell... the SOHC is already stripped for a rebuild and I was gonna start there and eventually put in a V8... but why change an engine twice when I don't have to?

even if the motor is completely toast, you're better off with a complete donor vehicle, in my opinion. motors are cheap. every part you need for the swap are not. having a physical roadmap is a big plus too! lowball him and take that baby home!

Ok.... So... I've found a 2000 limited V8 rollover.... 190k kms on it.. the guy reckons it runs really well... but as you can see from the pictures it's a heavy roll.. he wants $700 and it's a lot nearer...
