i dropped the oil pan out of curiousity and found pieces of the guide/tensioner? it was some plastic and 1 piece that looks like part of a metal clamp...pickup was clogged with plastic pieces, typical..ill get some pics up, wasnt as bad as ive seen some but i think all the plastic went straight to the pickup.

also got my driver door lock to work using this trick i picked up here...thanks

Im looking at a '98 motor for this thing? any compatibility issues i should know about? pats system? etc...

after removing the motor and opening it up it turns out 3 of the 4 guides failed, only one left intact was the LH cassette...there are marks on the valve cover where the rear timing chain hit it, that completely was off the guide and it wore down into the front bolt...interference marks on all cylinder heads but the valves look fine and hold compressed air. i ended up buying a complete timing kit, full gasket set w/ bolts and a LH thread cam sprocket bolt ($19) on ebay for $291...i have to get the the timing tools then ill be ready to put it back together, time it and hope for the best.

Questions & Problems:
i snapped the rear cam sprocket bolt in half, should did my research on that before i put an air tool to it. any tips on getting the rest of the bolt out of the cam??

where are the timing marks on the sprockets? jackshaft and balance shaft

broken bolt extraction

. . . i snapped the rear cam sprocket bolt in half, should did my research on that before i put an air tool to it. any tips on getting the rest of the bolt out of the cam??

Fortunately, I have no first hand experience with extracting broken bolts. Since the camshaft sprocket is no longer attached it should not take much force to rotate the broken retaining bolt. The problem will be finding a clockwise extractor since the bolt loosens in that direction. Perhaps a high grade sheet metal bolt/screw will be strong enough.

The only timing marks are on the balance shaft sprocket. Timing the balance shaft is difficult to explain without drawings. Have I sent you the SOHC V6 assembly instructions? If not, PM me your email address and I will send them. You will not be able to replace the balance shaft tensioner without removing the block girdle (upper oil pan). Some members have avoided doing that by slipping the broken tensioner parts off the shaft and slipping on the new ones while never removing the mounting bolts.

Im not sure if i took the motor apart at TDC...but this is how far off the timing was on the cam...

the set screws are the two on the bottom of my last pic right?

balance shaft tensioner?

the set screws are the two on the bottom of my last pic right?

Are you referring to the screws that secure the balance shaft tensioner mount? If so, their heads are on the bottom. Be sure that your tool is fully seated when removing and tightening the screws so you don't strip the heads. Some members avoid replacing the balance shaft chain because of the effort involved. They just replace the tensioner and guide.

Im referring to the set screws i need to back off so i dont damage the cylinder block cradle when i install it...

i was goin to replace the balance shaft chain as well, why is so much effort involved?

block cradle set screws

There are eight set screws in the bottom of the block cradle (upper oil pan). Two are external in the front and six are internal and will be covered by the lower oil pan. I did see any posted photos of the block cradle.

I'm not familiar with the balance shaft chain replacement procedure since my Sport is two wheel drive. I think the balance shaft must be removed in order to replace the chain.

EDIT: The SOHC V6 assembly instructions indicate it is not required to remove the balance shaft to replace the balance shaft chain. It will be necessary to remove the primary chain and sprockets in order to remove the crankshaft sprocket for the balance shaft chain. It's not clear to me how to slide the crankshaft gear and chain forward and back if the balance shaft sprocket can't move forward and back. Maybe there is enough slack in the chain without the tensioner and guide installed.

well engine is in and everything runs fine, thanks for your knowledge and help streetrod...

i was cruising down the highway at around 60mph and hit a bump and the whole front end started shaking including the steering wheel, i had to pull off at the nearest exit and slow down and it went away, any ideas what this could be?

Congratulations!

I'm glad that your vehicle is running again. Looks like it may be the same color as mine - toreador red. I don't have much experience with suspension problems. Mine still shakes at around 70 mph even after replacing the left lower control arm and the right upper control arm. All of my tires/wheels are balanced. I plan to check the driveshaft universal joints and the steering components.
