My EATC is a little different to the illustration in the owner's handbook.
Where the handbook shows a button marked 'rear fan off' my EATC has a button with Mech/Eng on it.
I push the button and i can't tell if it's doing anything.

Also, is there a function to blow non A/C air onto the windscreen?

don't know about your first question. do you not have rear a/c controls? as far as your second question, no. unless you want to unplug your a/c compressor or pull the fuse. it may surprise you to know your a/c can also come on at pretty much any setting (other than vent i think) as long as the outside are temp is above 55 degrees F.

That's what I got from the the handbook. I wanted to turn the A/C off and still have the vent blower because the A/C pump seems to be playing up. It's making a noise and a burnt smell and now the fan belt is broken.

The pulley clutch looks a bit wobbly. I have a spare, I just didn't feel up to paying an A/C tech right now.

Just pull the connector plug on the compressor.

Eng/Met not Mech/Eng.

There isn't A/C control in the back.

i can't imagine what that button is supposed to do (ENG/MET) ENG most likely stands for ENGINE, but MET... ? maybe someone else with this setup can shed some light on this. i'm curious as to what this is supposed to do.

ENGlish/METric - lets you change between Fahrenheit and Centigrade is my guess.

aaahhh, maybe that's what it stands for, but the OP said it didn't seem to do anything when he pushed the button.

English - metric is my guess too. Maybe he didn't notice the display change, because he was looking for some other mechanical change.

Also, the defroster uses the ac to dry the air before blowing it on the windshield. If you turn on your defroster with the ac disconnected, it will likely make it fog worse (depending on temperature and humidity).

I'll check for that.

Why would an American car have "English" for a non metric option?

Maybe it allows you to contact this guy directly.

Quite likely, I've been living on pain killers and little sleep for 5 weeks now.

In my little piece of paradise it usually rains in the hot season making use of the heater on the windscreen very uncomfortable.
But I can't use the A/C until I find out why it broke the drive belt.

if your a/c pulley bearing is locking up, not running the a/c probably wont stop it from seizing up and breaking the belt again.

and also, his question about blowing air on the 'windscreen' would have been about 'windshield' had he lived on this side of the big pond...

I'll check for that.

Don't tell me you are driving this "thing" on the wrong side .... :-)

I better figger it out pretty quick then. It left me at the side of the road last night when the drive belt slacked off and I ran out of volts.
It's back home now.

The ac clutch looks a bit wobbly, I tried to do something about it yesterday but I don't have a 5/16 (?) spanner or socket, I'll have to buy one, now that I have transportation.
We've been metric around here for a long time.

I think the belt only broke when I tried to run the ac for the windshield demister, I mean defroster.

And, the Eng/Met does mean metric / imperial.

Thanks for your help guys.

I would have thought the Aussie flag on the first post would be a give away.

The AC clutch, and the bearing that's part of it, both are not hard to fix yourself. The bolt there in the center and one snap ring should get the whole assembly off. Then you can easily see what is wrong. The bearings are sometimes easy to buy, that's the rub.

The clutch is basically two parts, the center section is the magnetic windings, which either work or fail. If you have been seeing the clutch work at all, then that part is fine. The outer disc that you see spinning, that is the part that wears out from friction. You should be able to get that and the bearing, but it will take some hunting I'd say. A used clutch part would probably work fine also, they last a long time. It sounds like part of the spring mechanism of the clutch has broken, just replace the outer unit.
