Original Height of rear wheel wells:
Drivers Side: 33.25"
Pass Side: 33.50"

New Height of Rear Wheel wells:
Drivers Side: 34.50"
Pass Side: 34.75"

I gained 1.25" in height in the rear, just by swaping the rear leaf springs from the Mono-Leaf to a 4-Door Leaf Pack from a 1994 Explorer.

Tools Needed:
Hammer
Drift Pin(used to Align the holes....)
3/8" Ratchet
10mm Socket
1/2" Torque Wrench
1/2" Air Impact Gun
18mm Deep Impact Socket(These are not Easy to Find!)
13/16" Impact Socket
7/8" Impact Socket (Warrior Shackles Only)
7/8" Wrench (Warrior Shackles Only)

Removal:
1, Remove Rear Tires.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2, Support one side of the rear axle.
(To do this, I used a Ratchet Strap To lift one side of the Axle at a time, and I also used a Chain as a "Saftey" in case the Ratchet Strap broke...)(Also I performed this Mod while the Explorer is on a Lift, 6ft in the Air....)

3, Separate the rear spring from the rear axle.
-A, Remove the four rear spring U-bolt nuts.

-B, Remove the two U-bolts.

-C, Position the rear spring plate aside.
(On the Passenger Side it is Necessary to remove the Emeregency Brake Cable Bracket from the spring plate, to do this you need a 10mm socket.)

4, Remove the nut & bolt holding the rear shackle to spring.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5, Remove the nut & bolt holding the spring to front frame bracket, and remove the rear spring.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Install:
1, Install the rear spring to front frame bracket, place the bolt thru the bracket and spring, hand tighten the nut.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2, Lift the rear spring to the rear shackle, place the bolt thru the shackle and spring, and hand tighten the nut.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(I had to losen the U-Bolts from the 2nd side while tightening the U-bolts on the 1st side in order to get the Axle to Twist a little so that the U-Bolt Spring Plate could be flush up against the spring)
3, Install the rear spring plate.
-A, Position the rear spring plate underneath the spring.
-B, Install the two U-bolts.
-C, Install the four rear spring U-bolt nuts.
-D, Tighten the four rear spring U-bolt nuts to 65-87 Lb/Ft.
(On the Passenger Side it is Necessary to replace the Emeregency Brake Cable Bracket to the spring plate, to do this you need a 10mm socket.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4, Lower the rear axle onto the spring.
(making sure you have enough slack in the saftey chain to remove it, when you are done.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5, Tighten the rear spring to front frame bracket bolt and nut to 57-77 Lb/Ft.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6, Tighten the rear spring shackle lower bolt and nut to 83-112 Lb/Ft.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7, Repeat for Other side.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8, Replace Rear Tires, Tighten the lug nuts 100 Lb/Ft.

Hey Chris, hows the compaction in the springs? I switched mine aout about a month ago. It improved the ride, but I end up bottoming out more often.

Ever notice all us New Englanders drive Sports?

Since I have only had them in for a week, I have not noticed them Bottom out at all! I think If I do bottom out, it will be less then before.

No, I do know some New Englanders that are not sports but the ones that are the most talkative on the Forum are...

Great job Chris! Looks awesome!! I am going to have to see this thing in action soon!!

Bump,

Now A Complete Write up with Photos!

very nice write up and pics. I however had no lift. just used jack stands and floorjack. Gosh it looks soooo much easier the way you did it. Are those brand new leafs? They look so new.

Its a Wonder what a Can of Flat Black Spray Paint can do for you! The Springs are from a 1994 Explorer! I am attacking the underside with Spray paint now that I have my Body lift.....

nice Chris! like Soupbone said it looks A LOT easier with a lift. but do you space in between the u-bolts and the leaf spring? i have about 1/4" on each side. soupbone can you check that also. and yes i do have mine spring plate in the right position.

I love seeing my old parts on someone elses Exploder getting used. :bounce: Looks good. Glad you are likeing my old springs :D

Thanks for the writeup! I plan doing mine this weekend.

Do you guys have any tips for aligning the springs so the center pin fits in the hole in the axle?

Before work today I changed the right side spring out and it's now sitting on it's wheels but none of the bolts have been tightened. But the hole is off center and I want to figure out how to align it.

It's actually off center left to right. Looks like I will need to break out the hammer.

Ok I got it all done.

I will be sore for days though.........

It really cut down on spring wrap alot, not nearly as much clunking.

Also, the ride is just better, it's hard to describe.

Oh yeah, and it only gave me about .75 inches of lift.

And curtis, yes I do have space on each side of the u-bolts.
