2020 Explorer Limited
Hi all, sorry for bad thread title, couldn't come up with a better one. :-)

I have a 2020 Limited, I find the capless fuel system is ... picky, I cant put the nozzle all the way in or it just clicks off every like 100ml of fuel, so I have to pull it out to just the right spot to fuel. Is this just mine, is this just the way they work? Is there something I could do, or would I have to bring it in to the dealer to make it better ?

To note, I have not tried removing and reinstalling it, should I try that, does it just screw out or is that a bad idea ?

I doubt it is the capless feature that is the issue. The end on the nozzle is well past the flap. Have you tried fueling at different stations to see if that might be an issue. Not all gas pumps and nozzles are the same. Just a thought.

For me, the nozzle is a tight fit. But I put 19 gallons in today at full force. It didn't trip until the tank was full.

And you can put the nozzle all the way in ?

At a particular local Exxon station the pump usually works fine. At certain other stations I always have to make adjustments to the angle, depth and force of the nozzle. It is really annoying. My previous 2013 MKZ had the same issues. My 2010 MKZ did not have issues.

It's done it at every station I have filled up at since I purchased the car last July, it's never not done it

This basically sounds like my situation, expect every time.

It's funny, I have never had an issue filling up, but my wife says it clicks off on her all the time. We do fill up at different stations though:dunno:.

I have this happen about 30% of the time.

You say it has done it ever since you bought it in July and then you say it has never done it before. Am I missing something?:confused2:
BTW, I've never had an issue with this system on the vehicles I had with it.

I said it has never not done it. You missed a word. :-)

I found this on a different forum. It might help.

Here it is again with a different SSM number.

SSM 48791- 2020 Escape/Aviator/Explorer 2.5L Hybrid/3.0L Hybrid/3.3L
Hybrid/3.0L EcoBoost - Slow Fuel Fill, Premature Shut Off, And/Or Spit Back
During Refueling
Some 2020 Escape/Aviator/Explorer Hybrid vehicles and 2020 Explorer/Aviator vehicles
equipped with a 3.0L EcoBoost engine may exhibit slow fuel fill, premature shut off, and/or spit
back during refueling. This may be due to the interface between the fuel nozzle and the fuel tank
filler pipe. When refueling, advise customers to make sure to rotate the fuel nozzle 30 degrees in
either direction, retract the fuel nozzle slightly within the capless filler inlet, and/or use a
different refueling pump. Engineering is currently working on a solution for this condition,
which is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2020. Monitor OASIS for additional
information and schedule service appointments for customers once the repair becomes available.

Another issue is the feedback sensor built into the end of the filler tube that goes into the car can get out of whack. Not sure how it happens except that a service tech showed me a damaged one. Evidently there has been an issue with some people trying to remove them using a pliers in the belief that the fuel will flow faster. Duh !

So SSM 48395 would suggest that there is a difference in manually shifting to 'Park' compared to the automatic shift to 'Park' when you turn the ignition OFF while in gear. SSM 48791 could appear to make more sense. :dunno:

Ouch, why would anyone do that ? Do they think Ford just puts in extra parts just for fun and to reduce their profit margin? lol

I would bet that less people were shutting off their engines in park when they had a real shift handle.

It's been 4 months, and I still find the knob confounding. I have never "accidentally" shut off a vehicle in gear prior to owning the '20 Explorer. I have also never fumbled going between drive and reverse as much as I have since acquiring this vehicle with a shift knob. I have six registered vehicles from 1960 - 2020, and the ST is by far the most confounding as far as dealing with quirks which are supposedly features.

Yeah, I did it a few times too, and I am pretty sure I have never done that before in my life (Shut off engine while in drive). Took a while but I'm more used to the knob now and it's not so bad.

I wonder if they will eventually follow the Lincoln set up in the near future?
