Hello all.
I've my 94 since some months now.
I've worked on it a lot, but has never bought new O2 sensors to update them.
As the truck is consuming a lot in the city, i've decided to buy a new pair of O2 sensors now, thinking may be they needed to be changed.
I'm bring them from USA, here parts for this cars are hard to find.
Today for the first time, i've taken a look under the X to imagine how hard will be to change them, and i don't see any sensors!, someone has take them off.
The check light doesn't turns on when running, and the bulb is working cause i see it on, in "test position" before start.
Someone can point me where can i find the "hanging " cables and connectors of the O2 sensors?
I've seen some vids, and read a lor about how to change them, but i don't know where to look to find both unplugged connectors......
Here some pics.
Any suggestion?
I cannot believe that.

Maybe the South American models didn’t get them? Just guessing.

Hi, mine is 5 speed Manual.
Mmm, i doubt they made variants for South America , maybe the 5speed manual doesn't have it?...
I've a neighbour with a 93 5 speed manual, i'll take a look on his truck to compare.
Anyway, i am ready to accept that some of the previous owner take them off, as i've seen other mods ( corrected by myself ) that were ouch.

My 93 5 speed has them.

Hi RangerX. here's a picture of the exhaust and gearbox. i don't see a catalitic converter.
I don't know if O2 sensors can work witout it.
Can you please share with me a similar picture of your 93 5 speed ?
An Argentinian owner, sais to me that his 92, doesn't came with, and he adds them and runs better.... ( he found the 2 cables with the connectors with a plug) i don't know if you can add them withour catalitic converter.
here's pic of mine

Nobody stole them. Your model didn’t come with them apparently.

My 91 sport didn't have them trust me if it did it would have been unhappy.(exhaust half rusted off) I miss how loud that thing was sound like a v8 when it only had v6.

Not sure how the efi can run without them though.
Runs like a carb’d motor. It’s programmed with a safe, probably rich, mixture, and then send it.

I wish someone stolen it.
AC was removed because the last one didn’t repair the compressor.
Dash was broken as doors trims, headlight switch was replaced by any switch and the list goes on.
Now I’ve learned that some units didn’t have O2 sensors.
The next question is:
If I find the right plugs to connect the sensors, and I don’t have catalytic converter on the truck, the “brain can learn that I’ve installed them and do a right mixture?
My X is running reach, It smells.
Any ideas in this “convertion”?

Thanks all for your ideas

Without knowing how it was built from the factory, it's really hard to answer that question. Is there a local Explorer group? Maybe you could start one on FB or something. Find out how it was originally built and ask around in your area to see if adding O2 sensors will help it to run better.

Hi BK. In the Argentinian explorer group there’s a guy that has done it.
He’s sharing right now the experience.
The truck didn’t have catalytic convertor.
He installed both sensors, and the truck runs ok, and he improved consumption a lot. If I find the cables in the harness I’ll try myself.

If the cables are there; after you install the sensors, you can disconnect the battery cables for a few days, which should reset the PCM.

You could get a schematic diagram of the PCM wiring to trace the color codes of the oxygen sensors. Maybe the previous owner installed resistors to bypass the sensors to trick the PCM so that it doesn't show a check engine light.

Hi Brooklyn, the Argentinian owner send me this picture of the plug that were in place ( in place of the sensor) I ask myself if the wire is an electrical connection between 2 points. Anyway your suggestion is good as I need to find the color codes of the cables to jnstall. I’ve the Haynes, I guess it should be there, thanks!

Hi. I have a 5 speed manual gearbox. But I have an oxygen sensor installed on the exhaust pipe on the right. Probably on your car the sensors were removed and the ECU was reprogrammed

Check that plug with a multimeter. There's probably a resistor built into it. It's similar to the set up under the seat for the air bag.
Hi Brooklin.
I’ve found the 2 wires on my truck.
One longer than the other. Both with plugs
I,ve tested both and I’ve continuity, no resistor into them, just a wire between the 2 pins.
The plugs have just 2 pins
Here the pics.
The one with the longer cable has a sticker on it.
Searching for the code I’ve find just harness related stuff.

Hi Chirko
Seemed to be a manufacturer choice
As others have the same setup
If you have just one sensor I think you have an 92 o prior version.
What do you mean with the right , the one of the passenger side?
The one with the blue arrow?
Do you have a catalytic converter on yours?
If you have time and you want to can you take a picture of the exhaust and o2?
Thanks!!
