Will these wheels fit my X?

Hi Tim. Those Eagles are sweet looking rims. If you compare the -3/4" offset of the Eagles to the + 5/8" offset of the 7" wide stockers, you get a difference of 1 3/8" in the offset. Then add in 1/2" to compensate for the 1" wider rim, and you get a total of 1 7/8" that the wheel will stick...

    15 x 7 stock wheel offset

Emon, I just measured my backspacing. It is 4 1/8", measured from the flange which the tire bead rests on. Some people measure from the extreme outside edge of the wheel, which will add on another 1/2". This gives an offset of +5/8". I think the Ford specs are actually +20mm, which is pretty...

    PATS/Transponder Key Question

Hi all. my 00 Sport has the transponder ignition key system, and I only received one key with the truck. I understand that the dealer has to program the second key, if you have only one. (With two keys, you can do it yourself) Is there a way to disable this system, so that a normal (non-chip)...

Are Ranger rims the same as X's?

I know the bolt pattern is the same, but am not sure of the backspacing. I am pretty sure the bore hole will be the same, 70.6mm. (Assuming both the Ranger and X are 4x2's) Any info on Ranger wheels is appreciated. :chug:

    Favorite color for an Explorer

I've always liked the medium wedgewood blue. The one I bought just happens to be that color (just lucked out). I go into the garage at night and stare at it. How long does it take for that feeling to wear off?:bounce:

Finally pulled the pin on an 00 Sport!!!

Hi gang. I've had my eye on X's for a couple years now, and have been seriously test-driving since summer. I finally bought one. (See my sig.) It's got the last of the OHV engines in it, but it seems to have plenty of power for me. It needs a new serpentine belt and new brake pads (and maybe...

    Is anyone running Jeep wheels?

FYI, for what it's worth..... OK, I can now answer my own question. NO, Jeep wheels will not fit on X's. At least the ones I tried. The Jeep "Eccos" would go on the X's studs, but would not bolt flush because the bore hole was too small. The offset is also greater on the Jeep wheels.....

    Lug Nut Torque

I was wondering if anyone else used anti-seize on the lugs, Boondoggie. There seems to be a big difference of opinion on this, but I have used it on my alloy rims for years and haven't lost a wheel yet.....knock on wood.:hammer:

    Is anyone running Jeep wheels?

OK, I said the "J" word........Explorer and Ranger wheels will fit fine on Cherokees. I was wondering if anyone had bolted up a set of Jeep wheels to their X's? :bounce: :shoot:

Percentage of OHV's versus SOHC's produced?

Does anyone have an estimate of the number of OHV engines that Ford put in the later model X's? From what I have seen, most seem to be the SOHC's, especially in the 99-00's. I have a theory that Ford put the OHV mostly in the 2wd Sports, because they were lighter, and didn't require the...

this is my fourth Ford and my last

Some random thoughts.... My sister has a Toyota with under 60K on it. It has been at the dealer's 3-4 times now, for a leaking distributor seal. She says it has been nothing but trouble since she bought it (new). My aunt has a Buick, also with low mileage. Every time I get in it, something else...

Hi all. Will an X Sport with a keyless entry keypad on the door, also be equipped with a remote entry? Thanks. Don

    '02 Exploerer Transmission Fluid Change

Rgiles, what type of filter are you planning on using? Summit sells a kit that uses a standard spin-on filter, that also has a temp sender fitting. It looks like a nice one.....

    Tranny finally got me?

B94, this sounds too simple, but check to see that you are getting vacuum to the modulator. You can pull the hose off with the engine at idle to check it.

    Inner tie rods creaking

AK, $200 is a fair price if that is for both sides and includes parts. The tie rod ends themselves are about $25 each. You can do it yourself, one side at a time, if you feel comfortable with it. After removing the dust cover, you have to remove two small pins that keep the rod end from...

    Tranny finally got me?

Ray, did you replace that little pin that came out with the old modulator valve? The new valve dosen't come with a new pin, and they are very easy to lose.

spacers on stock wheels....anybody done this???

Guys, why is the track more narrow in the rear? Is it because of the engineering design of the independent rear suspension?

Will Jeep wheels fit an X?

I have a set of Jeep 15x7 alloys with 5" backspacing. I was wondering if they would fit on a 2wd X without rubbing....? I know that a lot of Cherokee owners run the "DeerHoof's" with no problems, but I think the backspacing on them is a tad less than 5"...

    tranny? replaced or not?

I had an A4LD rebuilt several years ago, by a reputable shop in my city. After getting it back, I was amazed to find that the transmission had been painted. And get this: the tranny had been signed by the technician that did the work! This showed me that they really did care about their...

    Drill Hole in T-Stat?

The hole is there to help expel any air that may be trapped in the block. It won't hurt anything to drill a small one in the new thermostat. Jeep 4.0's are notorious for trapping air in their cooling systems, and this is a common modification on them.

    What trans do I have?

The 1996 code T is indeed the 4R55E. I know this because I did some research when looking at a 96 Sport. The 4R55E and 5R55E are rated for more torque than the A4LD and 4R44E, so I assume they have stronger internals. Bzz, I "think" the filter and gasket will interchange, at least between...

Do the 98 SOHC's have plastic cam chain guides?

Thanks Robert. Those dates are good to know. I can now be selective in the models to look at. I assume that the noisy tensioner problem is not as serious as the plastic guides. Is this correct? And are they hard to change out, when the noise becomes unbearable? I've done a...

Do the 98 SOHC's have plastic cam chain guides?

Hi all. I'm looking at a 98 Sport tomorrow. I don't know which engine it has, but I'm worried about the dreaded tensioner problem. Does anyone know what model year that Ford fixed the tensioners? Thanks for any info. Don

Which trannys do 98 and 99 Sports have?

OK, it was a stupid question.... I found out that the 5R55E is the tranny that is behind the optional SOHC in years 97-00, and standard thereafter. The 4R55E (?) is behind the OHV engines; 96-00 (?). Which engine/tranny combination is the best to look for? I know the early SOHC's had...

Which trannys do 98 and 99 Sports have?

Hi all. I'm going to look at a 98 Sport tomorrow, and wonder if the auto tranny is different than what the 99 models have. The 99 has a 5 sp automatic, right? I need to know what year they changed over to the newer tranny. I understand the later model trannys are stronger. Is this correct...

Why does the Explorer Sport get such terrible reviews

I have looked at and driven several Sports for the last couple of months, from 94's up to the newer ones. In comparing them, the newer ones seem to drive and handle better than the previous years. This stands to reason, since Ford is improving the breed every year (or should be). There's very...

    Changing Tranny fluid

I am really impressed with the external filter set-up. In addition to filtering, it should also add to the fluid cooling.

    What temp thermostat?

After reading Maniak's post, I thought I would add this, FWIW: Jeeps are notorious for getting air in the cooling systems, and having to be "burped". The cure is to drill a 1/4" hole in the thermostat, and mount it so the hole is to the top (Jeep t-housings mount vertically). This allows air to...

    Common problems by year...

Wow, guys! Reading this thread is scary! I've been looking at Explorer Sports, but haven't bought one yet. Are X's really this trouble-prone??? I don't mean to flame, I just need a vehicle that is durable and dependable......and those 2-dr Sports really look good!

    Automatic Floor Shifter Available?

Robert, thanks for the pic. That is one smooth console and shifter. I don't know WHY Ford didn't put that in the domestic models. (I guess the soccer moms wanted it on the column) 410Fortune, I previously owned an 84 BII, and a friend still has an 85 auto, so I am familiar with...

Tire suggestions for a '93 Sport?

I have a set of BFG A/T's on my Bronco, and a set of BFG L/T's (Long Trails) on my Cherokee. The L/T is a quiet and smooth riding tire, and I would recommend it for highway driving.

    Automatic Floor Shifter Available?

Thanks for the replies, guys. This leads me to think that all the export Explorers were shipped with a floor shifter??? Ummm....If that's the case, maybe a stock Ford shifter is available somewhere. Looks like more checking is in order. Thanks again.

    Automatic Floor Shifter Available?

Hi all. I don't own an Explorer yet, but I've tried out several. They range from a 94 EB, up to a 99 Sport. I like the 2-dr's, and the SOHC 4.0 seems to have a lot more power than the pushrod engine. Has anyone converted the automatic tranny column shift to a floor mounted shifter? Is there...
