Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

This all finally leads into what took place yesterday and today - slapping the body back onto the frame! Now, before rolling it back under, we took a second to fit some SuperSwampers on and see how the backspacing looked: Even better than the wheels that were on it! Plenty of...

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

The next morning I took the tires off the frame so I could slither it out from under the body. Now that the rusty bones were out in the light for the first time in 49 years it was time for an inspection. Let's see what we find? Hmmmm.... that's a fail. Or a win for...

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

What better than a really stout drink to hold up your hopes and dreams? :D And speaking of supporting things with shaky ground, here is how the fateful day of the body pull went: Now, these boats are big pieces of metal that are low to the ground. I found starting with floor jacks is...

    1993 4.0 overheating

Another thing to keep in mind considering the vehicle is 23 years old, the temp gauge on the dash could be going bad. Mine did all sorts of back and forth shifty stuff when it finally went before finally settling on the left of the 'N' as normal.

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Next it was on to the rest of the body and what holds it on the frame. Now the nice thing is that all that holds the rest of the body down is 8 body mounts and 1 bumper. Or is the bumper a nice thing? Maybe not... but leverage will fix that! Now that's my kind of leverage! With...

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Well last month finally saw a warm spell in temperatures so I rolled Mad Max out of the garage and decided to crawl under the car and take a look at the frame. I recalled that it wasn't perfect and might have been in need of a little TLC so I thought I'd get a closer look: Who the hell...

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Alrighty! Time to get y'all caught up on the madness! Here is where we left off: I had diverted most my spending money to school and was left with just enough to buy sand paper. So I decided to start knocking out some of the minor cosmetic problems, such as the tanked paint job...

    Pic Request- Your Explorer Towing

Here is Captain America dragging my Galaxie frame to the sand blaster. I originally towed the whole car out of a junk yard with my Explorer, but didn't get a picture. On flat highway with the throttle pinned I topped out at 55! It was a lot of car to be hauling with the Explorer.... The...

    Utah_ee's '08 Explorer Build

Nice Rig! If you ever want to bump into some other Explorer/Off Road enthusiasts you should check out the Utah Explorer's group. It is a fun time :) Also, I've never used flicker, but I couldn't get your photos to attach either. Maybe consider using Photo Bucket, it is well suited for forums.

    How-To: 1st Gen Ball Joints / U Joints / Spindle Bearings

Did anybody else have a heck of a time trying to hammer out the upper joint? I took out the C-clip, but it has taken about 45min to get this far and it still won't punch out?

    Advice on Lift Kit

The Duff Lift was awesome! You can click the link at the bottom of this post to be taken to my thread which has me doing the 2" lift start to finish. The only down side of the Duff Lift is that the coils sag after use. All the other components are bomb-proof!

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Hey chefduane, a few years back I cut my hand slicing hamburger and had to get stitches. When the guy was putting my stitches in he had this sweet sterilized tool kit of different small surgical instruments (scissors, pliers, tweezers, etc...). When he was done he asked me if I wanted them...

    Show off your Wheels

I'm building a tow rig and want it to have the same wheels and tires as my Explorer so that everything is interchangeable. I went to the junk yard, got a pair and painted them. I like it enough I may just do this to my rims as well :D
  29. S

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

No brake booster, manual brakes ;) Also, got the rims painted! See what you think?

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Thanks man, it is a '67! It weighs 3800 lbs and with all the metal that has rusted off, maybe a little less :sawzall: I have the spindles for a front disc conversion, just need the time and money to get new calipers/rotors. I have a year to engineer this to be the tow vehicle I want it to be...

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Ok, let me finally catch everyone up to speed with how this all came about: I was at a wrecking yard in Magna, Utah looking for some parts. I saw the Galaxie sitting in the corner of the yard looking pretty sad and asked about it. As it turns out, the yard guy had bought it about 10 years ago...

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Well, I the brake hardware kit I needed to finish the front came in today. Threw it in and ready to check the last one tomorrow. I went ahead and gave the wheel a victory spin after getting the wheel bearings torqued down. I basically burned the whole day running errands, however...

    My 93' Explorer Restoration Project

Well, I'm definitely not standing around waiting for next year. I'm getting a move on things, or should I say a brake on things? Finally got a thread up to showcase my demolition derby car of a tow rig: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3428505#post3428505 I'll keep...

Mad Max - Galaxie Tow Rig

Allow me to introduce my Galaxie :D Probably more of a demolition derby contender than a tow rig, but you've got to start somewhere! I got this Galaxie from a wrecking yard earlier this year in January as a side project to get running. Long story short, it has now taken on an entirely...

EF 20th Anniversary Events - Planning for 2016!!!

Just got off the phone with Canyonlands Campground and they said they will begin accepting reservations for the 2016 season on August 1, 2015. They also said they do accommodate group reservations (and added that reserving that early would give us first picks of the whole facility). :D I'm...
