    P0721 Circuit Noise / Interference

@C420sailor Good going! Exposed wires can cause all sorts of issues when they start touching other metal. I'm a bit late to the party, but IIRC it was in 1998 that the VSS was relocated from the rear of the transmission to the top of the rear differential. I don't know how the early models...

What's bad: Ignition switch, lock cylinder, or neutral safety switch?

@84FLH Here to verify what you've already been told. You're on the right track so far. 1) Headlights turn on by themselves when key turned to ON position and while headlight switch on dash is in off position. 2) Headlights stay on when key turned to START and truck is running. This is with...

@410Fortune The only right way to do it, for all the right reasons. Big kudos.

2000 XLT - stock with mild lift

That machine is an absolute beauty! And the low mileage is nearly unbelievable. Not sure what to make of the 1st-gear observation, but with such low mileage and the transmission having been gone into by somebody (evidenced by the addition of the drain plug) I'd only be concerned for whatever...

1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

That will be fine for now, but in my opinion it would be a good idea to use some thing closer to the mounting surface size and shape (even if it's just a wood block cut and drilled to fit) so that way the part of the skid plate surrounding the mounting bolt holes doesn't take all the stress in...

    '98 Sport Fender Trim

410, that is definitely the part he's after. Wait for confirmation from him, but if the truck in his pics is his truck, that is both the right part and in the right color. He's got some pretty serious rocker rust going on there too, might need the skirt pieces as well. @JetTech582 Do you have...

    '98 Sport Fender Trim

That fender will fit, but it does not appear that either option available from Rock Auto will have the wide fender flare in question. These wide flares are hard to come by, so take your time scouring parts sources. I personally have never found one anywhere other than a junk yard. Sadly, I...

Options for a slow oil pan leak

    '98 Sport Fender Trim

Welcome to this forum! Nice Sport, good pick for a first car, or any number of car for that matter. Yours is the 3" wide flare, used on 2nd-gen Eddie Bauers and Sports until 1998. After 1998, it was only used on Sport models, as the Eddie Bauer and Limited began to use the new style, which...

    Front end suspension parts

I don't have any thing to add to this conversation that hasn't been said already, but +1 to the other fellas - they've already said what needs to be said. Personally, I support the use of MOOG parts. I use exclusively MOOG ball joints and tie rods. (Yes, I have bent them, but I doubt you'll...

    New Member

Shame, she was a beaut! The new Explorers with the massive hole in the front just don't look as good as the previous generations in my mind, but if Ford could do some thing about that nasty face, these would be beautiful machines. Hope you enjoy using this forum, and hope you enjoy your new...

Replace now or wait? 4.0L hydraulic chain tensioners…

@Fwirt Welcome to this forum! You've basically found the two experts already, but I do have 2 cents. Pay as much as it costs to get the right parts the first time, do the job right and do it once. Otherwise, you'll spend the time and money again on the right parts and the right job. You...

Inherited Clean G1 - Overheated drive home, worth saving?

@kubrickan The road paved itself for you - I'm with 410. If you've been lurking for long, surely you know what that man is doing with a 1st-gen in his shop right now. If not... here: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/1992-explorer-gets-a-solid-axle-and-v8-5-speed.508928/ That guy...

rack and pinion bushings, how to press out?

I've used a large C-clamp, some wood blocks, and a dowel of appropriate diameter to get the bushings into and out of shock absorbers. I can't imagine that this would be too far different. A press would be better, but you can make other things work.

Because I gotta have tow hooks

Dissociated from politics and corporate economics, electrically-powered vehicles unarguably hold certain very distinct advantages in certain use cases. That's why a lot of construction and special-use vehicles actually move under electrical power, and only use a large ICE to generate power for...

2005 4L no start - then what happened - help please

If you crank it and it clicks, replace battery with known good battery and/or jump start from car with known good battery. 2-3 years is all that can be expected from a common battery; I usually buy mid- to high-range (usually between $200-300, some times closer to $400) and like to replace them...

    2000 Mounty, speedo correction?

@I6CJ7 Now that is a beaut! She's super clean! Those tires look good on her, too. I don't know if you might have to pay for it, but when I changed the tire size and axle ratio (33" on 5.13 gears) on my '99 Sport, my local Ford dealer (which I don't use any more, for other reasons) adjusted...

By "half-blink", do you mean they blink faster than they should, or they don't light as much as they should? In either case, that beast is sure to catch some attention! I noticed that even the stock tail lamps in the red housings are pretty dim. Unlike modern car tail lamps, some of which are...

    My First Explorer, 2000 EB

Having both a Limited and a Sport, I am going to tell you right now that not having the computer display is more to my liking than having it. Having it is kind of a flex, since it's retro fancy high tech stuff, but having the little storage cups is much more convenient for every purpose. The...

    91 needs tires (31s?)

@dvdswan Nah, some of them like beverages that will make these concepts harder to comprehend. Incidentally, I second the idea of switching to a limited-slip diff at the least, as this has saved me from some potential stuck conditions. For the hardcore stuff, a locker is all but necessary...

    91 needs tires (31s?)

@DangerousDan1090 No problem at all! I had to do a lot of figuring stuff out on my own in order to learn this stuff, but when I saw the axle ratio actually written as a ratio, then it made a lot more sense. Please spread this knowledge (and obsession) to as many people as you can.

Because I gotta have tow hooks

She is a pretty thing! I've been happy with my '14 Hyundai Elantra since I bought it in 2019. My bro made fun of it for a while, I guess he forgot the company is like Honda, built its name on excavators, hydraulics, robotics, and industrial equipment. That sucker has been good to me, and gets...

    -Deathrow Update Log-

Messed with the Vulture and it has a slightly lesser delay than Hazey when shifting into Reverse from Drive or Neutral, but there is still a delay (normal for transmissions from ye olde dayes) and there is a very definite clunk, although it doesn't feel as hard as Hazey's. Could be due to...

Because I gotta have tow hooks

Those are impressive figures and handy changes, for a meager $1100 over base vehicle price. That much is basically negligible in to day's economy. Just needs some fog lights and then she'll be ready for any thing! Gonna wait and let her name herself, or do you have any thing in mind?

    91 needs tires (31s?)

@DangerousDan1090 The axle ratio (also known as final drive ratio) refers to how many times the drive shaft has to rotate in order to make the wheel spin all the way around 1 time. It is usually shortened to just the number of drive shaft rotations for simplicity (so rather than 3.23:1 or...

    Return from Truckhaven Jan. 08

I might be a relative noob here, but I've pored over these old Truckhaven and other off-road threads many a time, to look back at freeze-frames from days gone by. @DemonMudder Hazey has a significant delay when shifting into Reverse from any other position (with the possible exception of Park, I don't ever have a reason to Reverse from Park) followed by a really good, solid clunk. It would be concerning if it was any other vehicle, but I haven't noticed...

    Uwharrie 2025

@DemonMudder I just sent in the forms this week, but that doesn't mean that they have been reviewed or approved yet. On the other hand, that being so, sending a request to cancel the request might not accomplish much. If it takes them a long time to process the original request, it will...

I've never seen an overheat code on any of my 2nd-gens, and I've run them all pretty close to the top of the gauge (low-speed driving on sand for extended periods of time). Curious what temperature is required in order to set the code.

    Uwharrie 2025

Well, no disputes having been proposed, I am planning on placing the PTO requests for the dates of 10/27 through 10/29 upon my next visit to the workplace. Ordinarily I can reasonably expect that 10/30 and 10/31 should be my regularly scheduled days off, so this configuration should serve me...

    Strange symptom

@AA7KN I can't say what all runs through it, but there is a black cylinder in the driver's door hinge region with all kinds of connections running through it. If water or dirt gets in there, it can start causing all kinds of weird issues. Might want to get some wiring diagrams before you tear...
