Is the noise at all discernible when revving up the engine in either Neutral or Park? If not, and the fact that it seems to come and go, suggests gear noise rather than torque converter. "Gear" as in axle gears. imp

Which engine? A no-spark condition occurs (among other ways, also) when the PCM (computer) is not getting information regarding crankshaft position. The source of this information varies by engine. It may be due to a failed crankshaft position sensor, or camshaft position sensor. imp

Transmission. Failing part affecting reverse only. Possibly reverse band, clutch slipping, or one-way clutch slipping. AWD has no bearing on the problem. imp

The point here is that, since there are not O2 sensors for each cyl., one cyl. running lean (due to clogged injector) will be interpreted by O2 sensor as overall not enough fuel being delivered, so fuel delivery may be increased, causing actually too much. imp
