V8 Sport 5-speed
If a carburetor is mandatory, then you will need to address the question above, regarding a distributor. Explorers w/5.0L engines had no distributor, so if you expect to NOT use electronic ignition, no PCM, you will need an old-fashioned 302 engine distributor with ignition points. To work well...- imp

96 4.0l eb edition auto will not shift on its own
"Slipping" is seen by watching the tachometer-- it may show engine "speed-up" suddenly, as shift occurs, or even when veh. first starts moving-- lots of rpms, little veh. movement to show for it. Perform a pressure check on the transmission. imp- imp

Help please
Shift lever moves a CABLE, connected to Transmission Range Switch, which tells computer what gear you have chosen. 1. Brackets securing cable at transmission may have loosened. 2. TRS may have loosened, twisted out of proper orientation. 3. Cable itself may be at fault. imp- imp

antifreeze type
How long have you been running it? The "new" breed of antifreezes, (Prestone orange) came about as a direct result of massive warranty claims against G.M., some years back, after they had gone to a plastic intake manifold which "normal" antifreeze ate through! I noted that the new stuff came out...- imp

Thinking of 03 Limited Purchase...need advice
My Thoughts....... I bought an '04 3 months ago, similar mileage on vehicle. Here's how I test-drove it: Rural-area best, test drive on level road with no (minimal) traffic). 1. Shift from "N" to "R", back to "N", then to each forward gear, one at a time from "N". Note feel of engagement...- imp

2002 EXT Pulls Right
Possibility exists that a brake caliper on one side is not releasing adequately, allowing a slight drag on that side, causing the "pull". Raise front wheels off the ground, manually turn each one to check this out. If both sides turn with about equal effort, it is likely that the alignment...- imp

wheel weights fell off
Make certain when you have wheels balanced, that the guy does not attach weights which have been USED before. Only new weights should be used, as re-using them often results in loose/poor fit on the rim, and they can fall off, or move around on the rim. Matter of fact, many jurisdictions have...- imp

Will 5r55e valve body work in a 4r44e
How does one go about finding out such details? For example, recently, it began to appear, through reading many posts, that the 5-speed automatic had been in use in the 90s- I thought it came along in 3rd. gen. Explorers. imp- imp

Possible Torque Converter problem
Is the noise at all discernible when revving up the engine in either Neutral or Park? If not, and the fact that it seems to come and go, suggests gear noise rather than torque converter. "Gear" as in axle gears. imp- imp

You are saying then, that the 5R55E does not use the separate-mounted solenoid block like 5R55S? I have been under the impression that the 5R55- were all basically alike, regardless of suffix letter. imp- imp

98 Explorer will not start
Which engine? A no-spark condition occurs (among other ways, also) when the PCM (computer) is not getting information regarding crankshaft position. The source of this information varies by engine. It may be due to a failed crankshaft position sensor, or camshaft position sensor. imp- imp

P0171+terrible gas milleage=??
The point here is that, since there are not O2 sensors for each cyl., one cyl. running lean (due to clogged injector) will be interpreted by O2 sensor as overall not enough fuel being delivered, so fuel delivery may be increased, causing actually too much. imp- imp

P0171+terrible gas milleage=??
Trouble with injectors almost always involves insufficient fuel delivery, not too much. Inadequate fuel injected does not cause terrible gas mileage. Replacing injectors not a PITA process. Replacing a Starter
Many parts outlets have "lifetime" warranty on their rebuilt (and new) starters (good only for present owner), so they are betting that: 1. The owner will dispose of the vehicle before the part installed fails, and, 2. By the time the unite fails, if same owner, the warranty will have been...- imp

gas mileage
The real problem we all have, is that these tanks never seem to allow you to fill them plum full. If you have plenty of time, you can keep ticking in little bits of gas, wait awhile, nozzle will allow a bit more, etc. At least this is how the nozzles act in our neck of the woods, so each...- imp

Grease fittings on 2000 explorer
Sounds like control arm bushings, to me. Not lubricatable, generally, but you can try squirting some goober on them, look at them closely, first, and see if any rubber is hanging out, or torn and missing. Some solvents will greatly soften bushings, use mild stuff if you try this, maybe...- imp

4-spd. or 5-spd? How to tell.............
(Maybe should be in "Transmissions", but awful lot of trans. discussion on 2nd & 3rd gen. threads). Had a '96, 4R55-, now a '04, 5R55S. First thing I noted in the '04, is selector lever choices: "P-R-N-D-3-2-1", more choices than I'm used to (5-speed trans.). '96 of course had "P-R-N-D-2-1"...- imp

Front Hub issue?
This is a good point, and I thank you for making it! A way to visualize this is that while turning left, the vehicle tries to "roll over" onto it's right side, thereby removing the weight from the wheels on the left hand (driver's) side. imp- imp

Front Hub issue?
2WD front hub is exactly the same as just about any automotive front wheel hub- 2 tapered roller bearings and an adjusting nut to properly assemble and hold them in the hub. You may have done bearings like these before. Pull it apart and clean and inspect them, after manually turning the wheel...- imp

MAF? Oxygen Sensor? Klingons?
An educated guess suggests that if performance got worse with a new MAF sensor, it is responsible for that change. Sounds likely you have the wrong MAF, that is, it's calibration is not set for your engine, or it is faulty. Generally, a totally DEAD MAF will result in an almost undrivable...- imp
