99 awd clunking in reverse

i got a 99 awd seems like it takes a long time to catch into reverse and when it does if i give it too much gas its acts like its jumping out of gear what could cause this???

Transmission. Failing part affecting reverse only. Possibly reverse band, clutch slipping, or one-way clutch slipping. AWD has no bearing on the problem. imp
