    bad rattle

sure wish you could remember, cos i went over it today with a metal rod listening to see where the noise is comming from, and basically the engine sounds fairly normal, no loud knocks or rattles from the heads, same goes for the stuff running off the serpentine belt, and the sound sounds worse...

    steering nock on both exs

Mine was making a real bad grinding/clicking noise when i turned, (especially left turns) sounded like a bad cv joint, but it was the steering uj, my boot had split and it was dry as a bone, I just gave it a good squirt of wd40, that kept it quiet and got it thro the mot (I dont think the tester...

    bad rattle

thanks for the advice, ill try listening to the engine with an iron rod an see if i can pinpoint the source, and when i get time ill drop the sump. What has me kinda doubting its the chain causing the noise is that it seems too rythmic unless its clattering the casing at the same point everytime...

    bad rattle

Hi Y'all My explorer has had a slight start up rattle for a while, it sounds like others have described as "wet gravel swishing around in a dustbin " sometimes its still audible when accelerating too (tho most of that rattle disapeared when i pulled off the heat shield from the exhaust)...

    a/c fault and vaccum pipe

Last week , my ac started acting up, it was working fine, then on wednesday i turned it on max ac, cold air came out of the dash vents ( the main ones that blow air on driver and passenger), but then it started switching from those vents to the defrost vent and back again every minute or so...

UK Explorer 2000 central locking problems.

cheers Howard Glad you told him how to do that Howard, cos now i can put my fuse back in and disable mine, my drivers door stays locked due to a broken spring, and cant be opened from outside even with a key, so not knowing i could disable it your way, i whipped out the fuse, but it also works...

Cars been running just fine, (98 ex) then tonight on way home, i called at shop, parked up , when i came out i backed up and the car kinda acted like i had a cone stuck underneath, it was not wanting to go backwards, or rather i could feel resistance, thinking somehow i had run over a cone ( i...

    Clicking noise

Thanks for that info, you probably hit the nail on the head, because the boot on mine does have a split in it, in fact it looks like its meant to be split, its neatly cut in two halves , so silly me figured it was meant to be like that, and yes there is no grease in it, didnt realise it should...

    Clicking noise

Hi all, my 98 exp has developed a clicking noise when i turn the steering wheel, it sounds like the kind of noise you get when a cv joint is gone, but on mine it does it both when moving and stationary , im not sure, but i think its the universal joint on the steering column shaft, could i be...

So, is there any way for sure of knowing which fix is needed...(without waiting for it to all go kaput) ?

    newbie in Halifax

I read somewhere that on these explorers theres a design fault which causes the tensioners (or part of them) to break up and clog up the oilways and also maybe cause the chain to break thro the engine case. so does this simple oom12 kit fix this, or is the fix for that the more expensive...

    newbie in Halifax

I'm figuring they can't be that hard to work on. I lived in Oklahoma for 8 years, and just about everyone worked on their own vehicles, mainly cos there was like 1 garage in town, and a lot of folks lived way out of town, so being able to fix yer own is kind of a neccessity. This is the first...

Hi all, I'm a new member based in Halifax, (Yorkshire, not Canada), and was wondering if anyone knows of anyone who repairs explorers around the area.I'm in need of the timing tensioner upgrade, and a few other niggly things, and would rather find someone familiar with the exp rather than let...
