    Low 4WD light

The low 4WD light does not come on when that range is engaged. On turning the ignition on to start the engine all dash lights come on including the low 4WD. Do not know whether it is actually engaging. High 4WD does engage. Any ideas? Thanks. Les Bryant Brisbane, Australia

Helpful thread, for squeak, squeal, chirp noise from V8 and OHV v6 engine compartment

Under bonnet sqeaks etc. Had the same sounds from under the bonnet of my '96 UN V6 SOHC. Read the thread about the cam tensioner and thought the worst. Then I decided to do the old listen to the screwdriver test on various components and found the alternator had a harsh grating sound...

OZ cruise control incident and tyre size for '96 Explorer query

Thanks fex98. I guess if the blue tooth matter is correct, it does give some credence to the unsubstantiated media report I saw. Les Bryant Brisbane, Australia

OZ cruise control incident and tyre size for '96 Explorer query

Electrohacker is correct. The recall was to do with overheating brake fluid. In my comments about the cruise control matter I made no reference that could be construed in any manner as being my personal expert or non expert opinion. What I offered was an extract from a media report which...

OZ cruise control incident and tyre size for '96 Explorer query

Many thanks for that advice. A mate of mine in OZ gave me the same suggestion. I have a GPS on my VW trike, I may take it off and try it on an upcoming long country trip at Easter. On the highway in outback OZ the good officers of law enforcement are hot to trot on speeding, especially in...

OZ cruise control incident and tyre size for '96 Explorer query

Ford Australia have just recalled all year and model Explorers to check out/modify the cruise control system due to an Explorer going beserk on a main highway in Victoria, a State of Australia, where the driver virtually had no control with the vehicle reaching reported speeds of 150+KPH. He...

    Rear Axle Side Play

Had my rears off over the weekend to check the disc pads and discs (230,000's worth on the discs, very slight wear but do not look as if they have been scimmed at any time) and noticed about sixteenth of an inch axle side play on both sides. I did not explore (sorry about the pun) any further...

    CV joint grease

Well done Carguy. Your toolbox observation is on the mark. Those of us who have been around for some time have all sorts of casual non specific tool items like duct tape, cable ties, braided picture hanging wire, and what is common for most credible back yard mechanics, a good old...

    CV joint grease

Thanks folks. Your observation about the cost of imported items in Australia, especially spare parts is spot on. For example, a replacement one piece upper control arm for an Explorer in OZ, retails between AUD275-300 each, in my part of the world anyway, depending where you buy, and that...

    CV joint grease

I have read in a number of Forums pertaining to different makes of vehicles which have CV joints installed, varying views on servicing and greasing the joints. Most are very similar apart from the type of grease lubricant to be used. I have just rebuilt the CV joints on my VW powered trike...

    Upper control arm advice please

Good to get that feed back, thank you. Looking again more closely at both sides I have come to the conclusion that the right side two piece control arm is a replacement. Why do I come to that conclusion, you ask? Well, all the repair manuals I have read advise removal of the engine bay splash...

    Upper control arm advice please

Thanks IZwack! I can not see any type of damage or bent parts to the right side suspension which would necessitate a 2 piece upper control arm for the right side only to adjust castor. My questions is, are the 2 different types of upper control arms fitted to my '96 Explorer, ex Ford...

    Upper control arm advice please

Thanks Dan. I am aware that there are 2 types. But, sensible rationale would be that if the 2 piece allows for castor adjustment, why would only one side have a 2 piece installed? Does the other side with the one piece rely on snail adjusters? Or, heaven forbid, no adjustment at all. I think...

    Upper control arm advice please

I have a 1996 UN series Explorer XLT SOHC 4WD. Manufactured, complianced and imported from the USA arriving and registered in Australia, March 1997. In Australia we drive on the left hand side of the road so the drivers side is on the right, unlike the USA. Since I purchased this vehicle...

    E brake problem

The E Brakes, (in Australian terms, park brakes) on my 1996 Explorer UN do not work at all when applied. The car just rolls forward. The auto park is the only thing keeping it stationary. Not being very familiar with the rear park brake set up on Explorers and reading a bit about similar...

    Ball Joints

I have always worked on the principle that if a rubber boot, on any ball joint, cracks or tears leaking its lubricant, and that usually only happens with age, the joint is close to its use by date. In fact, I just had the lowers replaced on my UN model after 230,000kms and in doing so...

    High Mileage SOHC's Explorers

Explorer mileage My 1996 UN XLT 4WD has done 231,000kms. New Ford factory motor at 205,000. The other one just plain worn out. Runs like a well oiled sewing machine. Auto recon and torque converter at 230,000. New lower front ball joints last week at 231,000. New wiper blades, front...

    Computer reset - battery life

I had reason to remove my battery over the weekend to clean the terminals and clamps of corrision. I tried a 12V slave battery to protect the continuance of power so the computer did not go offline. Unfortunately, one of the connections I used slipped off and stopped power to the vehicle...

    Vortex generator

The Holden car has been designed and manufactured in OZ since the end of WW2, about 1948. It is a derivative company of GM USA., but autonamous in its business. Since then Holden and Ford have been fierce competitors in the OZ car market, still holding between them a major share with...

    Vortex generator

Thanks for the response Street Rod. Your point about elevation is spot on. Brisbane is on the eastern seaboard, being a river city about 30kms off the coast, whereas Roma is up the Great Dividing Range, west of the Darling Downs. About 600 feet above sea level I think. The Darling...

    Vortex generator

Since I bought my 1996 Explorer UN XLT 4lt SOHC, with 230,000kms on the clock, about a month or so ago, I have carried out a number of checks to ensure that it continues to run and perform to my satisfaction. I had to replace the lower ball joints which after the mileage it has done were...
