    V6 vs. V8: MPG

06 Explorer Eddie Bauer - 4.6 V8 w/ 3.73 rear w/ regular fuel - 80K miles on odometer. 16-17mpg around town, 21-22mpg highway, 15mpg highway towing 3K# boat. Overall, coming from a Suburban as my previous vehicle, I am thrilled by the gas mileage of the V8. I borrowed my buddies 09 F150...

Tire size recommendation w/ stock suspension

Hey Guys- It's time to replace the 245/65/17 tires on my 06 Explorer Eddie Bauer V8. I'd like to increase the size of the tire to fill out the wheel well better, but I am sitting on stock suspension and stock ride height, with no immediate plans for a lift. I am thinking 255/65/17 is a...

    Wanted Aftermarket 17/18 wheels & tires - 2006 Explorer/4th Gen

Ready to upgrade my stock wheels, looking to replace them with something aftermarket. Not too picky as to style or size, would prefer a 17" or 18" wheel and tire set that will fit w/ stock suspension and no lift. Tires must be in good condition with at least 50% life left. Ready to make a...

first modification to 06 Explorer V8: Class III trailer hitch

Towed my boat around all season with the explorer and aftermarket class III hitch. About half way through the season I traded in the old boat and bought a new one... 2' longer and about 1000 lbs heavier. Had to modify the flat 4 wiring to flat 5, by picking up the reverse light from one the...

first modification to 06 Explorer V8: Class III trailer hitch

My first major tow with the new hitch was a success. I pulled my 18' bowrider 300 miles from my NJ to NY homes. Truck pulled the trailer like nothing was there, even over the steepest hills. Love the V8! Plenty of stopping power as well, OEM brakes/pads on all corners. Avg 12-13 mpg when...

    Gen IV Towing questions

Well I just checked out my V8 myself, now knowing to look at the axle tag and sure enough, it says I have a 3.55 axle. I was told all the V8's came w/ the 3.73, like the V6 w/ HD towing... but apparently that information was bad. I get the same error and I'm on my home network.

    Gen IV Towing questions

For 2006 at least, the V6 was equipped standard with a 3.55 and if you upgraded to the HD towing package, a 3.73 axle was installed instead. All 2006 V8 receive the 3.73 axle as standard, regardless of Class II or Clas III hitch option. Finding 2 V8's w/o 3.73 axes would be odd. My 06 V8...

first modification to 06 Explorer V8: Class III trailer hitch

I thought "the look" would bother me, but after driving around with it back there for a few days, I really don't mind it. I kinda like having the dual hitches because it lets me run something like reverse lights in the class II hitch while I have the trailer rigged up to the class III hitch...

first modification to 06 Explorer V8: Class III trailer hitch

I went ahead and ordered an aftermarket Class III hitch for my 2006 Ford Explorer V8. I purchased the truck used about 4 months ago and for some reason the original owner opted to keep the standard class II hitch w/ the V8 engine. I have a boat, car and tractor that I like to tow around so a...

Towing Recommendations for 06 Explorer V8

Wanted to update this thread on my progress thus far. I got the new class III hitch installed. I'm not quite sure how to upgrade from the 4 flat trailer connector currently on the vehicle to the round style connector to support a brake controller. Does anybody know if all 4th gen explorers...

Towing Recommendations for 06 Explorer V8

I'm interested in all recommendations. I hadn't heard of the 06 w/ the V8 and 6spd needing a cooler. Is their none from the factory?

Towing Recommendations for 06 Explorer V8

Towing w/ 06 Explorer V8 - Aftermarket Hitch Update & what else? Hi Guys- New to the site, just picked up my pre-owned 2006 Explorer V8 a day or two ago, replacing my 2003 Suburban. I haven't owned an explorer since the mid 90's, so it's been quite a while since my last Ford vehicle. I...
