Failed Smog: HC, NO OK - but CO is high

PROBLEM SOLVED! Well, I decided to replace both upstream O2 sensors (figured out that the one I replaced earlier was the single downsteam sensor). Crawled under and found that the one on the left bank had come loose. I could wiggle it! Strange for something that is usually hard to remove...

Failed Smog: HC, NO OK - but CO is high

As noted above by 1.8TTony, it's a low high idle test. It's failing at high RPM.

Failed Smog: HC, NO OK - but CO is high

Thanks for the detailed instruction. I'll have to get a vacuum gauge, don't have one at this point. I'll let you know what I find. BTW, just checked codes again and both KOEO and KOER returned nothing. Nothing in memory either....

Failed Smog: HC, NO OK - but CO is high

I ***believe*** that it is a federal emissions engine. Originally sold in WA state. Would the fact that it fail with worse readings after I was sure to warm it up point to the temp sensor?

Failed Smog: HC, NO OK - but CO is high

I have a 1993 Explorer w/4.0 - and I am having a hard time passing smog. I have changed the Oil, Filter, Air Filter, Plugs and pulled codes - everything passed, no indications of any problem. The plug were platinum and had been in there 50k plus. That said, they looked like the motor had been...

    disappearing coolant

+1 on the advice to buy a pressure tester. In addition to the cap, there are so many places where a slow coolant leak can evaporate before it runs very far, much less hits the ground.

Anyone know the length of the L rear steel brake line?

Well, guess what? I snapped the left brake line near the wheel cylinder. So, I am going to have to replace that line (wheel cylinder to the fitting on top of the diff). I read in another post that these brake line are standard length - does anyone know the length of that one? Yes, I could...

    Freeze plug issue

So, it looks like I will have to pull it..... I have calipers and did measure the new plugs and they were right at 1.5 inches. Can't measure the hole with the engine in the car. So, it's driveable for now with the rubber plug. After I get the wife's car fixed - out it comes. In addition...

    Freeze plug issue

Well, I just got done replacing my left front freeze plug for the 4th time. Paid to have it done once, replaced it once with a metal plug (which corroded and leaked), a rubber plug which blew out and today with a second rubber plug. We tried to use a 1.5 inch plug - but both brass and steel...

Thanks for the advice. I think I am just going to do the crank seal without removing the cover.... she is still running very strong and I don't rack up many miles nowadays.

    Replace Timing Chain? Tensioner??

OK folks, I'm looking for some advice here. My Ex is a 1993 EB with 225k. Runs great, gets 14-15 mpg in town 17-19 on the road leaks about a quart about every 1500 miles from the front seal. Lifter noise on start up only. It currently needs a new water pump (leaking and occasional high...

    Strange brake light problem.....

You called it! That is exactly what the problem was. I ordered a nice new switch off of eBay for less than $50.00 and: No more weird brake/turn signal problems. My Cruise Control no longer blows fuses! While I was at it I replaced a buggy light switch and all my dash lights - most of...

    Strange brake light problem.....

I have a 1993 EB and I am having a very strange brake light problem. 1) Intermittently, either the left or right brake light fails to work. When this happens at one side always works. They never fail completely. 2) Whatever side fails, that side also is not lit up on the factory trailer...

What should I do while it's out?

Yeah, I did think of pulling the heads and letting a machine shop check them out. I have lost more engines to blown head gaskets than any other cause.

What should I do while it's out?

Well, after 200k both the front and rear main seals are leaking on my 93 Explorer 4.0 V6. I got her about 100k ago and have taken good are of her. Now I am looking at having to pull the motor to fix the rear main seal. Yes, I know that the front can be done engine in and that I could drop the...

Need to replace L front block freeze plug (second time)

Well, today I found the source of a coolant leak I have been looking for for quite a while. It's the second time this same plug has failed. I had a shop do it last time about 5 years ago. I will be doing the work this time. The plug in question is the one furthest forward on the left side...

    "Expanded" Fuel Tank

Many years ago, I had a 1984 Nissan 4x4. I was able to by what amounted to a fuel tank "expansion" tank. It mounted in place of the spare tire and was interconnected to the OEM tank. The filler tube was redirected to the expansion tank and a cross connect allowed fuel to "overflow" into the...

    Front Drivetrain Noise - ideas?

Problem Located and Solved OK, we figured out the problem. The seal on the back side of the spindle - the one that protects spindle bearing from contamination - was broken in half. This permitted dirt to reach the bearing. When I locked the hubs, instant horrible noise. Fortunately, I...

    Front Drivetrain Noise - ideas?

Update - Still searching OK, we have torn down that whole side (the side that was making noise) and the only problem we have found is a chunk broken out of one roller in one of the wheel bearings. I took the spindle to a driveline shop to have the bearing pressed out and he said it looked good...

    Front Drivetrain Noise - ideas?

Yeah, I did the work myself (with muscle help from the son in law). We did the ball joints, brakes and bearings. I'll try locking one side then the other to see if we can isolate to one side - then tear it apart. Thanks!
