Helpful thread, for squeak, squeal, chirp noise from V8 and OHV v6 engine compartment

The problem I had with my explorer chirping was that my harmonic balancer had deterorated and was wobbling and chirping. Took me a long time to figure out until I had got a code (can't remember the exact code number) basically stating my crank position sensor had failed. When I got to replacing...

    Oil leak

Yep, took a good look and sure enough that's it. I'm just trying to figure out how to get at it without removing the exhaust manifold...

    Oil leak

I have an oil leak coming from above my oil filter somewhere. I know my valve cover gaskets are leaking, and I plan on replacing those. My oil pan is not leaking, as far as I can tell. I just notice on the filter I can see where it's dripping down from above it. I was told it could be the oil...

    Returning squeal

If it was the "distributor" then you got taken for a ride. The 2000 Explorer, regardless of motor, does not have a distributor. It does have an ignition pack, which is controlled by the ECM. If it was the camshaft sync gear, I could understand that being described as looking like a distributor...

    Returning squeal

So, I have a squeal under the hood. I know I had posted about this previously, but I thought I had fixed it with the replacement of the water pump and belt. Now, after that, the squeal was gone for a few days, but it seems to come back. I replace the belt, squeal goes away, then returns. I've...

    Pulley Squeal

So, I got curious today and replaced the serpentine belt. It was a newer belt, so I didn't consider it before. Turns out...that was the problem. Thanks to all those who offered advice. Rich

    Pulley Squeal

Replaced the water pump today, and drove it for all of 5 minutes before the squeal came back...I really am about to give up on this thing. I've owned it for 3 months and have already put over a grand into it...:thumbdwn:

    Pulley Squeal

So I had it checked out by a reputable mechanic who I've used before and he confirmed it was the water pump. I'll be tearing into it over the weekend. If anyone has any advice on doing it, and weird tools I'll need, or anything I need to watch out for, let me know please :D

    Pulley Squeal

It seems most likely. Is there a bearing on it for the fan clutch or do I need to replace the entire water pump?

I'd like to get to know some of the active Sacramento members

I'm in Sac, off Watt and Elkhorn so not too far from you. I have this annoying pulley squeal, just can't figure out which one due to a lack of hearing. I've already replaced a ton of parts to no avail, so...I'm about to push this thing off a cliff :help:

    Pulley Squeal

I have a 2000 XLT with the 4.0L OHV. It has a squeal coming from the engine compartment. I've viewed some of the threads regarding the CMP, and have run the engine without the serpentine belt which causes the squeal to stop. I have already replaced the tensioner, idler, alternator, and PS pump...

    New guy in California

This is my first Explorer, and my wife and I instantly fell in love with it when we bought it. It's a 2000 XLT, 137k, 4.0L OHV, and drives like a champ. Has a hiccup right now with a pulley squeal, but thanks to the info on this site, I think I have it narrowed down. I look forward to talking...
