    Parking light / dimmer relay

Relay didn't fix it. I've had the dimmer switch apart before and cleaned it and the dash lights worked for awhile. I know there was a post that said which wires to jump to keep the lights on full brightness but I can't find it. It's not worth it for me to spend $70 for a switch since this is my...

    01 sport rear suspension sag

I tried the load assisted shocks and they did raise the vehicle quite a bit. Then I realized that the shock bushings were supporting a lot of the weight so I decided to do it right and replaced the leaf springs. Not too expensive and the new springs with the load assist shocks really make a...

Pulled to hard on frozen door - driver's handle broke

Do yourself a favor and buy an OEM handle from Ford. Replaced mine with a cheap aftermarket one and only lasted 6 months. The OEM part is not that expensive and seems much more durable. Not a hard job to replace. You can use 1/4 " bolts in place of the rivets and you have to unbolt the rear...

    rear wiper blade

Anybody know a trick to get the rear wiper blade to make contact in the center? No mater which brand or style I try ( beam or standard) the blade misses the window in the center of the blade.

    Shudder after brake job

At 60 mph I thought the wheels were falling off. Really scary! It's fine now. Thanks for your reply, Keith

    Shudder after brake job

When I was doing the front brakes, I turned the wheel while the engine was off to make it easier to get to the caliper bracket bolts. When I drove the truck after the brake job, I didn't make a lot of turns. I hope your answer is that simple. Thanks, Keith

Bought mine from my local ford dealer and they were not expensive.

    Shudder after brake job

This one is strange. I have a 98 Explorer XLT AWD and I don't think it has ABS. I changed the rotors and pads on all 4 wheels and brakes work fine. When driving home @ 60 mph, the front end started shuddering so bad that I thought a wheel was loose. Stopped and checked and all was ok. Got close...

1999 EB Explorer add a leaf

My 98 had the famous sag and I tried the coil over shocks first. It raised the rear to where it should be but I didn't like that the shock was supporting so much of the weight. Since I use then truck to tow a boat, I decided to do it right and change the leaf springs. I kept the coil over shocks...

    transmission cooler

I have a 98 Explorer with a factory transmission cooler but I don't think it's working. Where is the thermostat that lets the fluid through the cooler? I see that alot of the aftermarket coolers have it built in and the fluid bypasses the cooler until it reaches a certain temperature. Is the oem...

    98 Explore transmission leak

Turns out that the dipstick tube seal was leaking. Yes it already has a factory cooler.

    Transmission leak only when towing

I have a 98 Explorer with a 4.0L with SOHC and automatic transmission which I use to tow a 16' Center Console boat which is well under the towing limits of the vehicle. The truck pulls it fine and I turn off the overdrive unless I'm on flat open highway. The transmission doesn't slip and the...

    98 Explore transmission leak

I have a 98 4.0L SOHC and it looks like the pan gasket is leaking. It seems to be worse when I tow my boat ( it's only a 16' center console and weight is not a problem) and I turn off overdrive. Could it be worse when hot from the load? I don't have an auxiliary transmission cooler but I'm...

    yet another shackle problem

I had the same problem when changing my leaf springs. One side came out with no problem. When I removed the other side I took out the top bolt and had the complete leaf spring on the ground. I pounded on that bolt for an hour and finally went to Auto Zone and they had 1 complete shackle with...

    Alternator swap

yes but the wire that goes onto the stator has a clip that holds it on. The connector is small and will very likely fall off without the plastic clip. Your regulator plug may not have the center wire in it even though the plug has the terminal. Most starter and alternator shops would have the...

    Alternator swap

The extra plug is a stator terminal and connects to the center terminal of the regulator plug. Your present alternator doesn't use it. You can buy the stator pigtail and regulator plug in aftermarket parts or get them off of a junk vehicle. Keith

    Alternator swap

No, the alternators are not interchangeable. The one you have off the 95 is a 3G series and should be for an OHV motor. The alternator for the OHC is a 4G series and not only is it missing the extra plug, if you measure the mounting holes you will find that they are spaced differently even...

What is this and how do I fix it?

My guess is that it's the pipe to the EGR valve. Just a guess. Keith

    SOHC timing chain

I see a lot of posts about timing chain problems with 4L SOHC motors. I have a 98 with 150,000 miles and it makes no noise. I am a stickler for replacing parts before they go bad. I've thought about replacing the tensioner and guide before they fail but I have one question. How many Explorers...

    98 leaf springs

OK, I changed the leaf springs today and it made a big difference in the ride. When I bought the truck in August the rear was sagging so I installed coil over shocks which raised the rear. As I stated in an earlier post, I didn't like the fact that the shocks were helping to support the weight...

    98 leaf springs

I have the parts to change my leaf springs this weekend and yes, I did buy new U bolts. The repair manual says to tighten all the bolts finger tight and then lower the vehicle before the final torquing. I can see why you would leave the shackle and front eye bolt loose so the rubber bushing can...
