92 Explorer--Cannot release the parking brake!

Thanks. I had actually found that company yesterday and 2 potential parts. I called the yard this morning and they're shipping it to me tomorrow for $45 delivered. Should do the trick, I hope! Rob

92 Explorer--Cannot release the parking brake!

I messed around with it for quite a while in the parking lot. Tried tapping on what I thought was the release lever, pulling on the cable both directions from under the truck, loosening the adjusting nut where the cable "y" is, etc. No joy. Started trying to remove the pedal assembly, but...

92 Explorer--Cannot release the parking brake!

My old 92 Explorer 4x4 is stuck in the Home Depot parking lot because I cannot release the parking brake! It has been sticky at time before, but now it WILL NOT RELEASE. Worked when I drove away from the house, but not after a quick stop. The issue appears to be in the release mechanism...

Problem with tranny after radiator work

Just picked my truck up from the shop after having the head gaskets replaced and also a new radiator installed (cracks near the transmission cooler lines, they said). It is a 92 Explorer XLT with the regular Automatic Transmission and 170,000 miles. My dad had the transmission rebuilt twice...

    92 Explorer Head Gasket blown

Thanks for the answers, guys. So there is no special knowlege or technique needed for the re-install? Just drop in the push rods and screw on the rockers? I know I don't know what I'm talking about, but I imagine that care and skill is needed when putting things back together. Rob

    92 Explorer Head Gasket blown

I posted this two days ago in the Tech "Under the Hood" section and haven't gotten any responses. Hoping to get a "little action" here. Thanks, folks! ******************** My sister-in-law has been driving my old Explorer while she's in town. Yesterday the truck crapped out on her on the...

    92 Exporer blown head gasket

My sister-in-law has been driving my old Explorer while she's in town. Yesterday the truck crapped out on her on the freeway and I had it towed to a shop to check it out. The diagnosis is a blown head gasket and the estimate is $1550. (assuming that the heads are not cracked or warped). The...

    Starting trouble--just one click

I have not yet checked out anything on the starter itself. One of the problems I have working on this is that it "died" out front at the curb (and slightly downhill). I cannot easily get under it at all and certainly not from the driver's side (my legs would probably get run over). In its...

    Starting trouble--just one click

Well, the operation was successful, but the patient died. I replaced the solenoid switch (that's what NAPA called it) but have no change to the situation. Jumping across the two terminals on the switch with the key "On" generated the same click as turning the key. Any new suggestions? Rob

    Starting trouble--just one click

Thanks, guys. For about $20, I'll try the relay/solenoid as it is an easy fix, not too expensive and likely to need to be replaced soon anyway (18 years old and 150k+ miles). Rob

    Starting trouble--just one click

I just looked at a parts website and they show two different ones...one starter mounted and on not. The "not" one looks like what I have mounted to the side of the engine bay just behind the battery and in front of the fuse box. That would be an easy fix! (I thought it was a starter...

    Starting trouble--just one click

My 92 Explorer has been sitting on the street all summer because it wouldn't start. I'm finally getting back to trying to fix it so I'll have my spare vehicle back for the winter. I had recently had some service done (front end work, new serpentine belt), drove it a couple of times and then it...

    Need new brake proportioning valve

That's what the shop called it. Said it was mounted just below the master cylinder and was leaking onto the frame rail and running down to where I saw the drips under the truck. If that's not the proper name for the unit, that might explain why I can't seem to find one online anywhere. Rob...

    Need new brake proportioning valve

In the last couple of weeks, I developed a bit of a brake fluid leak. Finally got it into the shop and had it looked at and they said it was the brake proportioning valve leaking (and therefore starting to fail). They said it was a dealer-only item and over $300. Is there actually another...

Unusual problem with Radio in 92 Exp

Posted originally in the 91-94 Explorer Forum. From this past winter: The 92 Explorer that was my dad's since new has an unusual problem with the radio and I THINK with the 4x4 controls. I don't drive it very often as it is our 4th vehicle. When I do, for about the first 15 minutes, the...

    parking brake and antilock light?

Bump. Any firm resolution on this for the OP? Mine just started doing exactly the same thing. The parking brake light comes one even after being released and then when I come to a stop, the rear ABS light comes on, too. When I accelerate after the stop, both light go out for a while, then...

    Strange problem with radio

Bringing this back to the top. Having it still. I've been driving it more lately as I'm selling two of my other cars. I previously thought maybe it had something to do with the cold becasue it only started happening during the winter last year. Now, not so cold. Last week, though, we DID...

Just picked up junk yard hitch--rating question

Based on some Google searching yesterday, I think this is a "Pro Series 51" hitch made by Draw-Tite as a cheaper brand.

Just picked up junk yard hitch--rating question

I just picked up the hitch I found at a junkyard for my Explorer. It actually came off a 97. It has a 2" receiver, but the sticker for the weight rating has me a little confused. It shows a rating of 3500 lbs/300 lbs for weight carrying and 5000/500 for weight distributing. A) The 3500 lb...

92 Explorer needs front end work before alignment

Wow, that does look like a pain. That part of the quote was $111 for labor. Maybe I should let them do it. Thanks for the heads up.

92 Explorer needs front end work before alignment

Took my 92 in for alignment today and it needs some work before it can be done. I thought it might and now I have a list of the things I need to correct. They said both passenger side ball joints are worn, the lower more than the upper. Also the "radius arm" bushings are shot (I assume this...

Hitch and tranny cooler install questions

OK...thanks. Once I get the hitch and bolts, I'll pick up some Grade 8's the same size. I have an air impact wrench, so I can get them pretty damn tight. Rob

Hitch and tranny cooler install questions

Since I'm getting a cheap used hitch, it won't have any instructions. Not concerned about fitment (have read the stickies), but how should the bolts be torqued? Anyone have a figure? Should I get new bolts, or is reusing the ones from the "donor" X OK? When installing a transmission...

    Hitch the same 91 - 00?

I was calling around today to try to find a used hitch for my 92. I found one nearby on a 97. At first, I thought I needed to stay with 91 - 94, but Draw-Tite shows the same part number for all through 2000. Does this sound right? $40 for this one and they're going to pull it. BTW...one...
