i am deciding on getting a new car so i went to the dealer and they had a 2000 ford explorer XLS that had abotu 58,000 miles on it, the over all body of the car is in mint condition the interior is just as good. it seem like a good car for me but i heard some bad words about FORD, like people say some thing like Forget it Or Repair Daily or some crap like that, most of all is it a reliable car cause i dont want it to have seriours problems after like 5 years.

anyone own one like mine and what do you think about it?

thanks
Tyro

First of all, welcome. I too just made the jump into the Ford world. I have owned 4 nissans up till now. I was worried about going from a nissan to a ford in the aspects of reliability myself. But I could not pass up the deal I got on my Explorer. As for your question, just about every car make has a saying to go along with the name. Every car maker has their problems etc... I believe that you should just go with what you want/like. Get the car checked out before you buy, keep up the maintanence and you will be good to go. I have a family member that has gotten 250,000 plus out of 3 Ford trucks, including the explorer that he is driving now.

Reliability is such a hard thing to judge when it comes to buying used cars. You never know how the previous owner drove it/took care of it etc... The money you save buying used always outways the risk for me.

But you are most likely safe if you purchase the Explorer with only 58,000 miles.

Good luck with your car buying days.

I have an '01 XLS and it's been pretty good. Had some small issues under warranty, but they were taken care of. The thing that has given me the most trouble is the ball joints. 1st set went at 27k miles, second set went at 42k miles. Now the truck is lifted and has been wheeled, but Ford balljoints are junk. I put Napa greasable ball joints in this time, and they should be good for a looonggg time.

Which motor is in the truck, the 4.0 OHV or the 4.0 SOHC? If it's the OHV, it's pretty bulletproof, but doesn't have a ton of power. The SOHC has a lot more power, but it has had cam tensioner issues that were recalled, and then given an extended warranty. If it's a SOHC motor, ask the dealer if the 00M12 recall was done on the vehicle. If not, have them do it before you buy it. It's the recall to fix the cam tensioner problems.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my X. For all the abuse I've heaped on it, it keeps right on chugging along :)

I have a 99 XLS and @ 73K miles I could not be happier with it. It has been very reliable and has necer ever left me stranded. It has run great and still runs like new. I have the OHV motor in mine, which I heard are very reliable and almost bullet proof motors.

I know how you feel tyro2001, I was a Chevy guy since I start to drive, roughly 6 years and I had a 96 blazer before this that I could not get rid of a misfire problem with, I ended up totaling that in an accident. Anyway, I bought a 2000 XLS 4dr 4x4 which just came off lease, it had 36,056 on it when I bought it and I've put about 5K on it since Jan. No problems with it so far (knock on wood). It def has more options than my blazer did and I'm happy with it. I have the OHV engine which the only complant I have is the power steering is a bit loud and my blazer had a tit more power to it. Other than that its a great truck. Shines nice too ;) Good luck with it.

MInes an XLT but just the same its an X....mines been great I bought it mmmmm 5 month ago with 56K and it now has 63 with not a problem and I go offroad alot and it takes it well(its 2WD)....Mines the OHV engine....rock solid but not verry quick but hey its an explorer not a Mustnag GT

I have had my 2000 XLS for a little over a year now. No major complaints. If you can, get an extended warantee for piece of mind. My X did great in the snow this past winter and is a very comfortable ride, I travel 300+ miles a week all highway driving and I can't say as I have any problem power wise on the highway. Sure you aren't going to blow past someone at a stoplight, but the 4.0 OHV works for me. I chose the XLS over the XLT because I didn't like the position of the buttons for the power seats in the XLT and I wanted both a CD and tape player, which I could only find in an XLS.
I'd say go for it, you won't be disapointed.

thanks alot guys next time i go to the dealer i am going to check if the engine is OHV or not.
