Hi,

I am new to this forum and would like some advice on replacing the fuel pump on my '01 Explorer. I am a do-it-myselfer and have some knowledge and experience in repairing my cars but this is the first explorer I ever had. First question is, Autozone is asking if the pump is a 1 port or 2 port, how do i check this before removing the part ???
Second question, anyone has a detailed "how to" besides the one online at autozone ???? Thank you for all your help.

Check the vin #...

I guess they forgot to tell you how to verify this.. If the first number is a 1 or 2 , your truck was made in the US or Canada and has a returnless fuel system.. One port from the pump to the engine..

If the first number is a 3, your truck was made in Mexico and has a return type of fuel system and has 2 ports on the fuel pump..

Quick question though.. Is your fuel pump dead or dying or is the fuel level sending unit gone bye bye?

If your pump is bad, there are alternatives to paying the high prices for it through Ford and other sources... I replaced my 99 Sport pump a few months ago from an Ebay vendor and pay a outrageously low price for a replacement pump...And after changing it the pump has worked great so far...

BTW, is your truck a 2wd or 4wd? If it is a 2wd, to drop the tank is incredibly easy...

Raise the rear of the truck on jackstands instead of drive on ramps...
Pop the hood and release any pressure on the fuel system at the fuel rail
Under the back of the truck loosen the fill line and the vapor line and remove them...
On the drivers frame rail near the rear wheel find the pump and sender connector and disconnect it
Position an floor jack under the tank and raise it to contact the tank...
Remove the 2 front bolts at the front of the tank...
Loosen the tank strap at the upper middle inside of the tank...
With the tank loose, slide the tank and the jack rear to clear the front holder...
Lower the tank slightly; you will need to disconnect the fuel line and the vapor line from the tank ...
Depending on the amount of fuel in the tank, You can use a line in the fill port to drain it at this point or drop the tank down to the jack...
Remove the tank from the truck and remove the pump...

I think I covered the bases here... If your truck is a 4wd, there MAY be more to dropping the tank.. I couldn't tell you though..

Thanks for your quick reply, I just checked my vin# and it starts with 1FM....
The fuel pump is just beginning to die, when it gets hot (very frequently here in AZ) engine stalls when accelerating. As soon as it gets cold it runs well. I am going to check fuel presure before starting first time in the morning tomorrow just to confirm the bad news.
So i guess i still have time to order the correct pump and wait a couple of days to get here. If you still have the info on ebay seller or auction I would appreciate it.

Thanks a lot for your help.

One other tip...

Did you check or change the fuel filter yet? If there is any garbage in the tank or filter, the filter will fill up and restrict flow especially under heavy flow demand...

I bought this Explorer after the previous owner let it set with a half of tank of fuel for over 2 years...The varnish and rust that came out was unbelievable...

If you pulled the filter, was it plugged up or did it have any rust or rust colored fuel in it? If you haven't changed it yet, change it first... Also, if you wonder if the fuel has any junk in it, pull the filter and insert the supply line into a container and turn the key a couple of times to get a few ounces of fuel in the container and see what is going into the filter..

I will look for the pump vendor and get back shortly..

Ebay seller...

The seller is aitc168 and even though your truck is a 2001 I believe a 2000 pump would work for it... Check with them; they are really good for supporting their products...

Again, thanks for all your help. I will change the filter but next month I will take the family out for summer break and i don't want to risk it, I will change the pump and the filter together. Searching on the net I found rocka*to.com and seems like they have good prices. I'll also check on ebay with aitc168.
Thx a lot i'll let you know the end of the story.

I just bought a new rear wiper motor from Rock Auto. They must have been pushing those things out the door; I ordered it yesterday morning and it showed up this morning. Price was good too, hope this one holds up!
