Another thing....

Ford changed the PATS on the early and late versions of the 2001 Sport and Sport Trac. Make sure that the dealer is using the correct key blanks - they should look almost identical to the originals that came with your Explorer.

Key Type 1 - Type B PATS - Early 2001 (before 7/24/00 build date)
Key Type 9 or 15 - Type E PATS - Late 2001 (7/24/00 and later build date)

Here are photos of the PATS keys. As you can see, the early #1 style is easy to differentiate from the later #9 or #15.

It sounds like something is up with that Ford tool. The process of clearing the codes is what is hit or miss. The operator starts the tool process, that takes ten minutes, and it responds back as either pass or fail. After the process is successful, there are no key codes and anyone can add keys(no tool required). The process of adding keys is virtually the same as in the owner's manual.

It sounds like they are not erasing the PATS properly, or the tool is failing in that process each time. I don't know any details about how that works, just the general description I just posted.

thats what they are telling me but they dont know why they cant do it. or wont tell me why i guess. i have the right keys and they turn in the ignition, it would just be nice to hear the engine run to see how bad it was hurt.

Well if the trouble is stuck right at the PATS code erasing, I would see how much it would cost to replace the PATS. I'm suggesting a used PATS, your cost is the same after you have it. See if you can find one in a local salvage yard.

if i could ever find my cable for my tuner i would just shut off the pats but i cant find the cable as always
