yes i did a search. From my searches it seems that there is a tap near the drivers side rear tailight under the truck. I cant seem to find that. The only thing i see is some red nipple looking thing... could that be it? If not, how do i hook up the wiring for the trailer lights on an 01 XLT v6 4.0 ? thanks for any tips.

that is it. pull the rubber cover (the red nipple) off and you will the see the plug it was covering.

ok thanks. I found it. But now i have a couple more questions. When i was looking through the reference book for the trailer wiring kits, the 2001 was the only one thaqt didnt have one of those EZ connect kits for it. The only thing it showed me to get was the flat type of connector that hooked up to the trailer which is fine...but the other side, where it would have to hook up to the trucks electric is just wires as if im supposed to splice them myself and there was no tap/plug. Could this be an error? whats the deal. IF im correct, the tap that is in the truck is the round type of connection. My trailer used the flat type. Isnt there a kit that has a round type of connection at the source but then converts it to the flat type at the trailer? im prettty confused because the only package the book reference shows me is one that would have me cutting wires and twisting the wires together after stripping them. It doesn't have a kit for 'plug and play" thanks for any help.

yeah if you go to the ford dealer or go to an auto parts store and have them look it up there is a special pigtail with the round connector that will snap right into your truck and a flat one for the trailer on the other end.....you probably dont wanna be splicing down there as corrosion will eat it apart over time unless you do a very good job but those wires are pretty short. the pigtail from a auto parts store should be about 20 bucks .... i dont know what it is from the dealer

ok thanks. Btw, how sturdy are teh bumper/trailer hitches that come stock with the x's. The stock hitch is basiclaly the bumber and it has a place to put a ball. Is this strong enough to haul a 6x8 trailer and a quad? (raptor) thanks

I literally just yesterday went to wallmart and bought the adapter to just plug in sso you have trailor wireing it was 14.50 at wallmart...its goofey though i bought the harness for a ranger (sence are cars are practically that)and the notches didnt line up so i went a bough one for a F150 and it fil like a glove and works good to! I dunno if id recomend towing much with the bumper from what i read here but i towing a car(on a dolly though) my dad aid check the tougne b/c explorer can only hold 300LBs on the bumper and 3500GWVR

You will have NO problem whatsoever.......The Explorers rear bumper is rated as a Class II hitch....I have pulled a 2000 LB tent trailer up mountains with mine....

I also pulled a 1300 Lb travel trailer from Canada to Mexico and back....

ok thanks for all the help
