I like the looks of the 3rd gen, except for the rear hatch. A definite improvement in looks over the 2nd gen if you ask me. Ford finally made an Explorer that looks almost as good as a 1st gen.
Originally posted by rocket 5979 Just FYI it is the 4.6 SOHC not the 4.6 DOHC that is in the new gen explorers. And the 5.0 OHV has more low end torque stock for stock than the 4.6 SOHC does. But the 4.6 loooooves to rev!!! Just filling you all in on a little info maybe some didnt know.
You 4.0 guys arent completely assed out. I mean there are still supercharger applications for your truck and other things that will fit. But the aftermarket for ours will always be bigger being that the 5.0 and 4.6 motors are the only two motors used in the higher power ford cars. Besides the 5.4 in the GT and Cobra R. And of course the older 351 Cobra R. We luckily already have a huge aftermarket supplied to us by the other vehicles these engines go into. Yours has less of a market for power parts. But that is not to say that you dont have power parts available to you. Just look around and you will find them if you really want them. It all depends on what you really feasibly want out of an engine. If you want to eventually build a 500 horsepower engine combo you will not want to go with a V-6 to start things off with. Because it would be very hard to be able to make that type of power as cheaply as you could with a V-8. But if you only want maybe say 300 fwhp or so and that would be the max then maybe go with the 4.0 engine and work from there only if you couldnt afford the V-8 first. Other people have different priorities than me, I looove high power. Gas mileage in my eyes takes a distant second place to that. Maybe even third after driveability. Where as others sometimes want gas mileage and ease of maintenance and so on, but find later that they want a little more kick in the pants under the hood. The 4.0 has potential but you got to look for it in a reasonable level.

The 4.6 sohc was introduced in the Lincoln Towncar/Crown Vic/Marquis over 10 years ago, and the 4.6 dohc was introduced in the new Lincoln Mark 8 around 93' and a version of it was also in the Continental. The Thunderbird and Couger eventually had the sohc 4.6 also.
Then the Stangs got both engines starting in 96' but the dohc 4.6 in the Cobra had a bunch of different changes from the Lincolns. And later the F-150/Expedition got versions of the sohc. And then our Explorers got the 4.6 sohc for 02'+ while the Aviator has a slightly different dohc from the Marauder/Mach 1.
Scince were on the subject of 4.6's, the 03'+ Cobra's 4.6 dohc has forged internals and an iron block compared to the aluminum beforehand.
$500 a month holy cow. I just bought a 2002 for cash and my payment is $000.00
how can nyone pay monthly for somehting that goes down in value by the minute.
My house in florida before i moved back to mass was $589.00
that is sad to have a car payment that high..
save that for 10 months and you can have a decent vehicle,. and if you invest that monthly payment did you know that when you retire you will have many millions..
as my financial advisors advise me of.
Just my 2 cents,..
Well, if you do want an 02 or newer I would say, "do some hard looking around". I have an 04 xlt. I bought it in October with 11,000 miles on it. LOVE IT. I prefer street driving, but don't get a chance to really go off road. I wouldn't really do a lot of hard core off road driving with such a new vehicle anyways since they cost enough. Anyways. Mine booked for 27,450.00 and I got it for 20,500.00. My payments are 400.00 per month for four years. I had a trade in and some cash too though. I found it through a resale center. The guy found it for me from a dealer about 60 miles away. The dealer sold it to him for 20,000.00 and he charges an extra 500.00 for himself. He didn't go more since I was actually looking at 02's due to the price range and he knew it was easier to make the 500.00 than nothing. Good guy. One of the local auto places in my area.
But anyways. If you drive a few and decide that you would like a newer one, do some serious research and shopping around. Make calls. That's what I did.
I have an '03 with the NBX pack on it. 4.6 V8, very nice ride. I do have some issues with it, but overall it is a nice truck. Yes it was expensive - $32,600 - I went with the 0% financing so it is ok with me.
The question I have is - if I were to slap a super charger on this bad boy, would it stress the engine too much, and what would the returns be?
