I have an '02 Explorer Eddie Bauer that has had the rear diff replaced at 29,608 miles (as per SSM 17736). It now has 82,000 mi. The shop I take it to for tires and oil changes recommended changing the rear diff lube at 75,000 miles. Is this something I should have done? I know the manual says I can wait until 150,000 ; but I've read about them going out from running dry and don't want to go through that (I had to replace the tranny at 48,000 miles with no help from ford)! Would love to hear your opinions!

H this one has a lot to do with personal preference.

Ford diffs use full synthetic which allows far more miles between oil changes.

BUT...I just drained the rear diff on my wife's explorer this weekend (200K miles) and that stuff was nasty.

Me personally? Every 80K miles. It's cheap insurance.

So yes, I'd change it.

Change it for sure. I agree it's cheap insurance. Just make sure you trust the people doing it for you and NEVER Let a Jiffy Lube type place do it.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll go ahead and change it. Now I just have to fix the cruise and she'll be good!
