I have a 2002 Explorer that has an unusual loud whining rear. The X has 54K and I bought it used with 49K. Dealer says it is within acceptable noise range.
I have a friend who has a 2003 X and has had three rears replaced. The noise
Comes back at around 3000 miles after each change. You would think by
Now FORD could build a X that does not have a problem such as this.
Does anybody else have this problem? I bet a lot of people do.

This seems to be a common problem. Seems to be on the Limited slip models. Take a look at the edge of your drivers door on the little white sticker and see what code is listed under axle.

Axil type is D4 on the sticker

Yup, 3.73 Limted Slip. We got the same with the same problem. Its going back in to get it replaced.

Good luck on the replacement. My friend is a ford mechanic and is going to change mine soon.

Is this omething that ford is going to recall?or our you guys paying for these replacements?

I took out a extended warrenty when i bought my used 02 X. My friend works for FORD and says he will replace mine under warrenty. The dealer where I picked up the truck says he will not cover it under warrenty. This is a BIG PROBLEM with 02 and 03.
Not sure if any others are effected. NO! ford will dance around replaceing the rear if you complain.

I had the same problem on my 04.
Replaced rear end.

Noise is back.

No linited slip.

Got to tell you, my 92 X runs and sounds much better than my 02. And my 92 has 165K. Ford needs to get it together!!!

I agree! Having to get the tranny built at 33k isn't acceptable!
