'02 Sometimes will not go into park

Sometimes it is difficult to get my Explorer to go into park. I have to turn it off and recrank it and play with the steering wheel. It is not consistent though sometimes it works fine. Any thoughts?

ford has a TSB 04-22-12 on 11/15/04 - Increased effort to shift from drive to park.

warranty: eligible under new vehicle limited warranty coverage.

looks like they replace the Brake Shift Interlock swt.

You might also check the shifter cable... mine stopped going in park every time...coincidently after Ford had the trans out for a front pump seal.

when the needle showed park, it was actually still in reverse.

Brought it back to ford, they said there was a crack in the shifter cable case and a new one was almost $400 (labor included)

I asked for the manager, and explained that they just had the trans out and if it was cracked they shoud have seen it then or they cracked it..

he agreed... and reduced the cost to a $25 charge
