Ok here's the deal. My OD light has been blinking from time to time, but I can shut off and restart the truck it goes out.
I took the truck to a dealer this morning and am being told that the codes are for slippage in second and fifth gear and I need a new transmission.
Is there anything I can do to prolong the life of the trans? Is it possible it's just a sensor? The truck only has 40k and this would be the second trans. original owner had one replaced @10k, did they really have that many issues with these trans or am i the exception?

Do you know what the code numbers are? It's easier for a shop to replace an entire transmission instead of paying a tech to troubleshoot. Sometimes it's necessary to rebuild it if there are broken bands, stripped one way sprags or broken planetary gears. A lot of times it's related to a solenoid block, valve body or servo bore issues.

im saving now to have my 01 sport trac trans rebuilt it wont move when i put it in reverse but drives fine going straight....i broke the reverse band im being told

Codes were p0732, p0735.

Both codes indicate it could be "SSA, SSB, SSC, SSD or internal parts". The shift solenoids give a lot of problems. I haven't any experience with them so I'll leave it to someone who has to help you out.

Try another dealer. They CAN troubleshoot the shift solenoids with their Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tool. I just can't see 2 transmissions in 40K miles! If the first dealer just read the codes and said you need a transmission they're trying to slip you the weenie!

First trans was done before I purchased the truck. I have contacted Ford Customer service, we'll see where that goes. As far as the dealer for this latest issue, I trust them completely. The service manager is a friend of mine. My issue is with Ford. Funny, The person i spoke to at Ford put me on hold and called the service manager to see what he was willing to do to help me out, as if it was the dealerships problem. I don't get it step to the plate and take care of the problem!!

Good to have the FORD dealer service manager for a friend. Why are you asking these questions here instead of your friend? Surely he knows those codes do not automatically translate into
