I've got an 02 with 75k on it. Problem started on Sunday with the O/D light flashing, then making a noise yesterday when accelerating, both problems came and went. Today it started slipping driving from Montgomery to MEM. I made it back and took it to a dealership. They are going to look at it tomorrow.

I'm wondering if there have been problems with this transmission? I have had the fluid flushed 2x at about 35k and 70k, as the manual says.

The dealer gave me a price for a new transmission as a "worst case" ($3000 + tax). I'm a liitle upset that a vehicle with 75k and having trans problems. I also have a 97 f-150 with 155k on it and it has been awesome!

Basically I'm wondering if this is happening elsewhere and maybe get a recall on it?

Which model '02? Automatic transmissions are funny things. Some guy will beat the shjt outta his and never change the fluid and not have a problem. Someone else can baby theirs change fluid regularly and still something breaks. Go figure. fate.

The 5R series has had more than its share of problems relating to the main control unit (valve body). One thing concerns me greatly in your situation. Mainly... NOISE. Tranny's can have VB problems, miss shifts, slip, have a harsh engagement etc... but in a general sense NOISE.... is not good. There are a lot of close fitting parts in an AT (no... not like a watch, which is what the shops want you to think - but still not a lot of excess room around spinning metal....) if something lets go and it can soon grenade a tranny. (an exception might be a busted band anchor which may just fall into the pan)

The best thing to do is be there when they pull the pan. Metal in the pan = rebuild in your situation I fear (unless it was a busted band anchor, which I am doubting). Still it might be nice to see it.... instead of be told about suppopsed "metal".

I wish I could be more specific, and more help, but at the moment I cannot. Let me know what you find in the pan.

ps. if you cannot be there, ask them to save the pan "as is" if they find metal... better yet take a digital cam pic of it if they do and share it with us. (Helps keep em honest too).

not sure which one i have. how do i find out?

I mean an Explorer 4x4, Sport trac etc....

A while ago, when I rebuilt an A4LD, I had a whining noise coming from the bell housing that changed pitch everytime I started to accelerate. The rebuild lasted for a little over a week until it failed again. It truned out that the rebuilt torque converter was defective. This was the first time that I've experienced this problem. Does your transmission have a similar sound, especially when it is cold?

sorry it's a 4x2 xlt 4 door.

it does have a simialr sound. they told me it was a broken band.

It was not a band, it was another part, which broke several other parts in the chain. Metal all over the place=total rebuild. What I'm trying to find out, is if there are problems with the transmission in this vehicle, and what I can do to get something back from Ford for this rebuild.

i think you could do better than 3000.00 call around that is just ford price but if they have already torn into it well you will have to probably take it to another shop in a box you have 5r55w or 5r55n or 5r55s trans not sure specifically but im pretty sure it a 5r55w havent seen any tsbs on this one but havent really looked search the web
you may find something.

It's the 5r55w. I had another shop do it for $1800.
