2002 Explorer XLT Limited
Had a few spare hours today so I decided to start cleaning up my Explorer that I just bought last Thursday.

I got pretty far. I got most of the swirls out, roughly 80-90%, cleaned under the wheel wells and removed the water spots off the glass. Next day off I'll be re-vamping the plastics and shining the wheels.

Pics of progress today:

After wash and clay bar it's ready for buffing+polish:

Hit up the water spots as well:

Hopefully I'll have better lighting for pics when it's 100% complete.

Nice work!

Did you use a M105/205 combo?

Yes, and finished with P21s.

105/205 is my favorite combo.

I am sorry if I am asking a really simple and stupid question. How did you remove the water spots on the rear window?

M105 on a yellow foam pad. Couple quick passes with my pc7424. Make sure to tape off all rubber and plastic as the m105 on yellow pad will burn.

TA- just in case you weren't familiar, the M105/205 is a Meguiars product system (the compounds) and the PC7424 is the DA that drives the pad...

Looks really good, PDX- nice work.

Are you on MOL also?

amazing looking detail work but u ang joe have me confused on all the lingo, don't try to explain i wont catch on

yes da = buffer
compound = polish u put on the buffer pad to clean

...or am i wrong?

DA = Dual Action polisher (random orbital)
Buffer = $10 Wal Mart wax pusher. :)

(Those buffers don't have the electric power to do what PDX did with his PC) (PC- Porter Cable brand DA)

The compounds are the liquids that you would use on the pad.

P21s is a Carnauba wax.

If you're interested, check out Meguirs Online (MOL)... There is a LOT of great info over there.

(Sorry to hijack your thread PDX!)

No problem Joe, thanks for answering the questions. I have a full time job, detail on the side and 2 kids. I don't have a lot of time to post, mostly only get a chance at night when the kiddos are in bed.

I'm not on MOL, never heard of it. Funny because I almost exclusively use Meguiar's products.

I also have a PC7428 rotary but that one only comes out when i'm finishing a paint job(2000grit sanding marks) or if a car is really beat, I always finish with one of my 7424's though, I hate buffer trails with a passion and I make sure to never leave them.

I was thinking about making a guide on what you need and a "how to" on DIY detailing since this site doesn't have it. I'm detailing an RX330 tomorrow, might be a good time to start.

Would be nice- I've been planning to do a DIY, but never have, I get too involved in the process and miss pictures. :)

I usually link people over to MOL, since there are tons of writeups already on there, and I for some reason can't manage making a writeup on an exterior detail. No idea why... The closest I got to an actual writeup was when I used the new MF 300/301 system on my truck. Have you tried that yet? Works incredible...

That started HERE

Cheers!

Is there any way you could do video clips thay way we as viewers could see the changes that occir durring the process so we know what to look for while doing it. If possible can u also add what not to do. So I dont ruin a paint job

HERE is one on using the DA

HERE is a good one on swirl removal

Link to the subforum- lots of vids...
