02 XLT, tell me what I'm doing wrong. 4 Low doesn't want to engage, just flashes.

2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4. I'm just testing some things out here. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

SUV drives fine etc but it totally slipped my mind to test the 4x4 out when I bought it last week. The guy said it worked good and the thing looks BRAND freaking new, with paperwork for a fresh tranny rebuild etc so I just figured it worked.

I decided to test it out tonight and I went into a parking lot, hit 4 High, cranked the wheel and it hopped. OK good!

I hit 4 Low an the light just flashed for a few seconds then went out. I hit it again, same thing. I tried pushing the accelerator but no hop.

Thoughts?

Did you put the truck into neutral and have your foot on the brake when you switched to 4Low?

G'day mate, to engage 4x4 low on the 3rd gen you need to be stopped, foot on brake, shift to neutral and keeping your foot on the brake hold 4x4 low button on until the light comes on. Hope this helps. Reverse the procedure to disengage except push the 4x4 auto button.

Oh... I had it drive with my foot on the brake. Like I was saying above, I had just tested 4 High to see if it was working, I got wheel hop so I stopped with my foot on the brake and just pushed 4 low!

I see... So it's a safety feature to keep some idiot from putting it into 4 Low on dry pavement and blowing up the transfer case then? Hell, I would have never figured that out!

Didn't come with a factory manual. Guess I should order one off eBay!
