03 2x4 to 4x4 trans swap

Will the transmission out of a 4x4 explorer work in a 2x4 explorer. It looks like they are the same and the tail shafts are the same length but not sure if the tail housings can be swapped or if the trans will work electronically.

I researched this a while back. The transmissions are the same except for that tail piece, but unfortunately that has to be done from inside the trans case. So you'd have to disassemble both entire transmissions -- working from the bell housing back -- to swap the tail pieces. Not at all worth it, IMHO. You'd be better off rebuilding yours or grabbing a RWD transmission from a junkyard or from one of the many online parts recyclers.

Thank you, that helps me considerable on my decision. I can't find one local so I will probably tear it down and rebuild it. Haven't done a Ford before, should be "fun".

Don't forget to deal with the bore hole wear issue (drill and sleeve, or other options). Transgo has a good parts upgrade kit.
