2003 Explorer Limited
I recently purchased a 2003 Explorer Limited. When I first got the truck the 1/2 button didn't work on the keypad. Now it seems there is no power to the keypad at all. None of the buttons light up when pushed nor do the interior lights come on when any of the keys are pushed. My remote fobs seem to work appropriately. I recently fixed the ground on the wiring harness that comes into the driver's door to solve my "Door Ajar" issue.

I thought I read in one of the threads that there were multiple fuses that could be checked but can't seem to find it again. I took the keypad out today and made sure the wiring harness was making good contact but to no avail. I know what the factory code is already.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

I could use the same help here! Bump

Welcome aboard!! :salute:

Could use a some more info. What exactly is your issue with the keypad?

Having said that, here is something to get you pointed in the right direction:

I had similar electrical issues with my '02 XLT. The dome lights would stay on until the battery saver feature turned them off, the accessory delay wasn't working, the driver side puddle light didn't work, the keypad on the door would set off the alarm when I pressed it, the door ajar light would flash and beep at highway speeds, the radio would shut off as soon as I turned the key off, the delayed accessories didn't work, etc. The alarm would beep twice when I armed it. Recently all 4 windows stopped working. Most recently the driver door lock actuator stopped working.

A lot of electrical issues can be traced back to broken/damaged wire(s) in the boot between the body and the driver's door. I found 3 broken wires and repaired them. The thin black ground wire was broken and after repairing it all was back to normal. When the windows stopped working, I repaired the thick black ground wire and the windows now work like a champ. I had to repair the pink/black wire to fix the driver door lock actuator.

Here is the thread for removing the door panel: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=303524

Here is a great thread for checking for broken/damaged wires, thanks to synyster for this awesome write-up: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=270081

Be sure to take your time when looking for broken/damaged wire(s). Check all the wires for breaks/damage. When you think you're done looking, look again, and again, and again. A bright flashlight can be very helpful.

I'll see if I can find some specific info for the keypad from my shop manuals. I'll post any relevant info here.

Hope this helps out. :biggthump

Please keep us posted as feedback helps others reading this post looking for a fix to the same or similar issue!

Here is the wiring diagram for the the keypad. It has 6 wires as follows:

Brown
Light Blue with Yellow Stripe
Red
Yellow
Light Blue
Black

When checking for broken/damaged wires in the boot, I would pay close attention to the wires listed above.

Good luck in getting it sorted! ;)

No lights, no response from keypad, key fob works aswell as power windows and locks for drivers door, was wondering about the fuse I can't seem to find one for it, but ill check the wires aswell, if none are the culprit then ill just replace the pad itself

General fuse info is contained in the owner's manual. If you don't have an owner's manual, Dead Link Removed.

The keypad is powered from the Central Security Module, as shown in the bottom of this picture:

According to my '02 Shop Manual Wiring Diagrams, the following fuses are related to the Central Security Module:

In the Central Junction Box, located below the dash on the driver's side:

Dead Link Removed

Fuse #16 is a 15A labeled Power Mirror, Security Module (turn), Manual Climate Control. Fuse #27 is a 7.5A labeled Electrochromatic Mirror, Security Module, Digital Transmission Range Sensor - Backup Lamps.

Dead Link Removed

Dead Link Removed

In the Battery Junction Box, located under the hood behind the battery:

Dead Link Removed

Fuse #2 is a 20A labeled Door Locks. Fuse #25 is a 20A labeled Security Module (horns).

Dead Link Removed

Dead Link Removed

I recommend checking all fuses in both the Central Junction Box & the Battery Junction Box. I also recommend checking for broken/damaged wires in the boot, paying particular attention to the wires related to the keypad, before you start throwing parts at the problem.

Good luck & be sure to keep us posted. :D:thumbsup:

Review the above post.

More detailed diagram

This diagram helps to better understand how this keypad works. Note the diodes internal to the keypad. It's how 5 different keys are sensed by the body security module with only 3 wires and a common:

I came across this thread looking for a way to get in my '02 Mountaineer when both key fobs AND the disconnected keypad were locked inside (I was refinishing the pillar trim). Without the diagram with the diodes, I couldn't figure out what wires needed to be shorted together for each key. Not that anyone's likely to need to do this, but here's what you do:

Switch 1/2: short light blue/yellow wire to brown wire
Switch 3/4: short light blue/yellow wire AND red wire to brown wire
Switch 5/6: short light blue/yellow wire AND yellow wire to brown wire
Switch 7/8: short yellow wire to brown wire
Switch 9/0: short red wire to brown wire

I used 24 gauge wires in the C500 connector (8-pins, 6 of them used in the connector but 2 of those wires, light blue and black are only to power the light on the keypad). I needed another pair of hands, but I got the car unlocked! Each "key" needs to be pressed within 5 seconds of the previous one, and after 35 key presses without the right combination, you need to wait 60 seconds before trying again.

Got picture to post in previous message so removed from here

Picture? I hope
