Hello all,

I have a chance to purchase a 03 Explorer XLT for $3000 (dealer will not move on the price). Good price, really clean, & drives good but need a little work. It has 148,000 miles on 4.0L , power door locks, power windows, power sun / moon roof, third row seat, rear air / heat, cloth interior, driving / fog lights, factory tow package w/ 3.73 limited slip rear diff (hitch does not look used), & close to new tires.

Here is what we were told needs done by the Ford Dealer (selling this): both rear wheel bearing, both rear struts & springs, rear axles seals, both pinion seals, something with the drivers door handle / lock actuator, noise in rear diff (I think this is the clutches slipping when making a left turn), front bumper has a 3" cut / tear by right driving / fog light (right corner of the bumper has a scuff mark), and the 4 wheel drive does not work (no lights or clicks). As long as the rear diff doesn't need a total rebuild, I'm thinking the parts will be approx. $1,000 if I do all the work.

What are your thoughts? Should I pursue this or let it go to auction at the end of this week (dealer says if not sold by Thursday)?

Sounds like a good deal as long as you do all those repairs yourself.

Did you ask about the condition of the timing chain? the 4.0 v6 is notorious for that. This will be a deal-breaker for me.

Motor was quiet. Only noise was in the rear while driving. I'm aware of the timming chain issue of the 4.0l. My 97 has 183,x.. on it. It did make some noise last year or the year before, that has been cured by using Rotella 15-40 every 3,000 mile oil change.
