Yes I own a 99 ford explorer 2 door with the 5 speed manual . Love my explorer it will be with me for life .. I was looking for a 5 spd manual transmission when I came across an 03 explorer 5 speed being parted so I bought the transmission . Now my 99 has the M5OD-R1 , the 03 suppose be M5OD-R1HD now are these interchangeable . Cause I did try and buy a manual transmission out of a 99 . But got ripped off on it , thanks Facebook market place .. any and all help would be greatly appreciated

The 03 explorer manual transmission is extremely rare. The transmission is not the M5OD-R1. If it is original it is a M5OD-R4. Easiest way to identify is if it has a removable bellhousing. If the pedals are still with that explorer, those are hard to come by and are worth grabbing.

Unless it was a 03 explorer sport or sport trac then it would be the correct m50d-r1 and hd version

02-04 2 door explorer and 02-05 explorer sport trac are still built on the 96-01 explorer gen iii chassis whereas a 2003
Explorer is what’s called a gen iii Explorer, completely different animal.
I’m thinking he got the trans from a sport or trac because the 03 gen iii with a 5 speed is EXTREMELY rare

I just got done dropping the transmission out of my 03 this afternoon . The bell housing isn’t removable but the tail housing is and has an extra plug in it . And yes I still have the pedals so . You think the transmission with work in my 99 explorer

Is it a 2003 explorer
Or is it a 2003 explorer sport trac or sport?

Read above
It makes all the difference in the world

Non removable bellhousing points to it being from a sport or trac

Yes you got the correct transmission
Mazda m5od-r1 and in 2003 it is the hd version
A nice upgrade for your 99 and it will
Bolt in
I suggest a new luk self adjusting clutch and luk hydraulics

You were reading my mind on the luk clutch kit with self adjusting lace cylinder

No no self adjusting pressure plate
Not same clutch as a 99

Here use this one, will last way longer

Luk

I do several
Clutches a year, I will only install luk and only with new luk slave and master cylinders

Great time to install new shifter bushings as well

Dorman 917551

Is your 99 explorer a sohc 4.0 or a ohv 4.0?
The ohv has a smaller clutch and you would want to use a 03 sohc flywheel (or modify your flywheel to accept the larger
Clutch)

OHV the bullet proof one

Both flywheels have the same bolt pattern from sohc to the ohv right
The ohv was 6 bolt to about 96 or so, then went 8 bolt like the sohc.

This is the donor explorer mean green she’s got a great body just to many issues originally just suppose to get the transmission he called me the day before I was to pick it up and told me the whole thing for for a couple more hundred I said OK .

I like the color

This is the snowball . I’ll post pictures as the transplant takes place . I’ve already behind swapping interior parts I know there will interchange . Considering a 5.0 build with the chassis of the 03

Use the flywheel from the donor it will bolt to your 99 engine yes and accept the larger sohc clutch
I upgrade every ohv to the larger 03+ clutch it makes all the difference in the world

Can have it surfaced at local machine shop
