" Stage 2 " Intake

completed this today...

I will do a write up specifically for this " style " intake for those who are interested...

my tank is almost empty, so tommorrow i will fill up, and report any gains that may come from the mod " mpg related ". I estimate about 7-9 days before i have to fill up again. from what little driving i have done since the mod, i have noticed a much more aggressive exhaust note, and in the mid to top end of the rev range, I can really feel the truck pulling a little harder as well...

excited to post further info :D

also, after a few runs, i will expand the intake to a " stage 3 " intake with a open cone filter, and heat shield... then report the further info...

Great to see you've upgraded your intake.
What kind of coupler did you use on the airbox?
I also noticed after I did my intake the better exhaust note, and also the engine is louder.

I bought a full set up, with open cone " spectre " filter...

as i began lining up the intake piping, and noticed that the piping i bought lined up great with the factory airbox. so i put on the 3'' coupling into the airbox, and it was almost snug, but not quite. so then i thook a trip to pepboys looking for a 3.5'' to 3'' coupling. of course they didnt have that, so i bought a 4'' to 3'' reducer coupling. 4'' end was to large, so then i opened up the cone filter box, and the filter has 2 reducers. a 3'', and 3.5'', i then took the 3.5'' reducer, and placed in the 4'' end of the coupler. the fit is snug, and perfectly fits over the round edge of the MAF. then i secured the 4'' end with a clamp, and it sealed pretty well...

I tried a DIY CAI... I used a little to big of tubing and i guess youd call it "too much" air. The the transmission would slip some when cold, put the stock airbox back and it was fine! Anyways my driveline instructor looked around and found out the the MAF and TPS on Exs help control pressure in transmission. So Id say stay with smaller pipe for better end results. I gonna try like what icecube did this weekend.

The pipe is a 3" pipe on mine so its the same as the TB (seems to be no problems with transmission or anything). The stock intake goes from a 3.5" to a 3". Didn't know this until I put the new intake on :)

complete 3'' piping, and you'll be good if you try this again...

so far no negative effects to report from this mod. this weekend I am going to clean the K&N filter, MAF, TB, and also thinking about doing the "TB spacer mod " to reduce or eliminate the throttle lag when you punch the pedal...

.....about doing the "TB spacer mod " to reduce or eliminate the throttle lag when you punch the pedal...

The throttle lag is horrible  My 98, at least when I press the accelerator it moves, the 05 sits for a second.....then moves. :D

i hear that... i want to get rid of it...

theres one one ebay (cold air intake), $40 they reckon is good for 01 - 04 4.0v6. mines an 04, would this work with the intergrated maf stock air intake?

happens on most vehciles when you put CAI , the A/F ratio is slightly off and it feels like the engine doesnt now what to do at some points. when you gun it it shifts perfect. I heard a tune will fix this changing shiftpoints and correcting the A/F ratio

04-05's have the drive-by-wire throttle and they have been known to be slow to respond. A tune will fix the throttle lag alone and the factory computer should be able to adjust for the extra air coming in from the CAI with a tune. But a tune will make everything better:D

I may give that mod a try. I ordered my CAI for my X. I'll let you all know what happens with that and how it works. I'm looking forward to getting it in the mail. :)

its a free to nearly cheap free mod, and i think its worth the shot

Well I'm sad to report back my intake didn't work. :( They advertised it for an 05 Explorer and it doesn't work. It throws my car in to fail safe mode. I hope that the company will let me return it.

what did you end up ordering Nate ?

what doesnt fit ?

Its the MAF. I tried the 02-03 MAF, but the explorer goes in to no fail mode or something like that. I ordered the one on the other page. If I can't return it, I'm sure someone here on the EF can use it.

post a picture of the intake.

EDIT: I found something good for everyone. For us with 02-03 (not me, but I will have the intake) this is a $30 intake system. Just replace the filter with a K&N universal and get a heat shield. It says it will work with 04-05's but I'm not sure on it. I would think with the 04-05's this just hooks up to the air box, but I'm not 100% sure on this.

EBAY MOTORS: 02 03 04 05 FORD EXPLORER V6 4.0L SHORT RAM AIR INTAKE
I was hoping my 02-03 MAF sensor would work. But as you read above my X rejected it. So I just threw the MAF sensor out, I don't know if its bad or not. Back to my stock intake :(
