Hi!

I have just purchased an '04 Explorer Eddie Bauer, V8 AWD with 100 k miles, that started to have a blinking "4x4 High" light condition. It seems to be timed for every couple of minutes and flashes for 6 consecutive flashes. It does not go into AWD on demand but can be engaged in 4 high or 4 low easily by depressing the corresponding buttons. (I'm sure that I'm not the first one to experience this problem).

The "Service Engine Soon" light came on shortly after I got it home, but I resolved by replacing the Throttle Position Sensor which showed up on the code reader.

This is the third Explorer that I've owned, and this is the first time that I experienced any problems.

Any suggestions?

Thanks! Bf.

Welcome to the forum!

Check the ground wire on the transfer case shift motor. If you do a search on here you'll see this is a common solution to this identical problem. If it's been worn off, replace the wire and you should be ok.

Thanks!

Wouldn't the transfer case drive motor not function if this wire was at fault? It goes in 4x4 High & Low without any problems, just the "High" light flashes and no AWD. However, I'll check it to ensure its not loose or broken.

Thanks for the suggestion!
