Both motors have something called 'timing chains' but the long serpentine looking belt doesn't contribute to engine timing, it only turns the pulley's. I wonder if your dad is thinking about the timing belts on some overhead cam cars, usually the small 4-cyl. . .

It might help everyone if you could be a little more specific:
What engine? Year? Miles? What was the original symptom?

If your working on the chains, the timing marks would be under the timing chain cover? Pic might help too? For the V6 there is a special tool to align the gears as there are Jack-shafts, half-shafts, couple of timing chains on that one too. . .

thanks! yeah i think hes getting a little old school now days! I gonna do this timing diy so hop i can get some good reference here! Thanks again!!

04 Ford Explorer 4.0L XLT 165,000 Wrench light, Service Engine light and Codes come back link error so nothing can be read out! What could keep it from starting?

you have to use a OBD2 scanner with the "can" capabilities. the current one you tried to use cant read the new systems in some cars.

does it run? take it to autozone and they should be able to scan it for free.

If it won't start and you can't read the codes, something may be wrong with the ECU itself.

And don't even think about changing the timing, it can't be done. Any timing adjustments are made by the computer, but it isn't adjustable.
