2004 Explorer XLT 4x4
Hi everyone,

Looking to get a CAI for my 4.0L v6 XLT, I am not seeing anything except for sport track stuff. What have you guys done?

Thanks for your help...

Check K&N. I picked up an 03 XLT V6 a few months ago and the owner had put one on. No idea if it actually helps performance, but I can certainly hear it "breathing."

The K&N kit for the 4.6 will fit on the 4.0 with little modification. Part # 57-2564

I got my SCT X4 today :burnout: I will be modding the factory CAI box and intake pipe. Pics in a few days...

K&N makes a specific one for the 4.0s Part #57-2537 https://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=57-2537

Along with 2 other models as well for that 4.0 Part#57-2529-1 K&N 57-2529-1 Performance Air Intake System, 57 Series FIPK

And last one Part#57-2529kp K&N 77-2529KP Performance Air Intake System, Intake Kits

Couple of those links have pictures in the reviews that show how it works on the 4.0. Looks like a direct fit and not much modification

I purchased the K&N 77-2529kp It is not a direct fit. I contacted K&N and they told me there is nothing that is a direct fit for an 04 XLT! I designed a CAI, throttle body spacer and plenum spacer for the 13 mustang 3.7l v6 with great success. Here is a pic of what it looked like. My plan is to do the same with the 4.0l v6.

I appreciate the help though!

Well there is 2 other kits for the 4.0 for the years 2002 and 2003 so IDK why the other one that is not listed on the 2004 chart wouldn't work. I mean is it really that big of a difference in those years for the intake/air box system? I can't see it being that way but then again it is K&N and having dealt with them before when I ran auto parts stores nothing shocks me that their stuff is messed up.

It doesn't get any colder than factory. It pulls from right behind the grill. The best cai for the 4.0l is the one you leave on the shelf.

Leave the stock air box and filter alone. Those so called "cold air intakes" are a bunch of snake oil and just allow hot air into your intake which actually reduces power. You only think it makes more power because the intake is louder due to the baffles being removed. The factory intake is already a true cold air intake.
