04 XLT Driving me nuts - Literally

When you replaced the lower ball joints did you check your wheel bearings? If He just got new tires that eliminates all the tire balance and rotation issues.

Alignment can and will cause a shimmy, however the old tire would have shown major cupping issues if it was caused by an alignment problem. And when you put the new tires on it would have masked the vibration for the first 100 miles or so until the new tires start to cup again.

It could be a Ujoint drying up, I have seen where a ujoint can cause severe vibrations when they start to go, however they are usually also felt at low speed when applying torque to the drive train.

If it is your transfer case you should be able to check your fluid and see signs of abnormal wear IE burnt/dark fluid that smells bad. It may be a good idea to take a look at it and make sure your seals didn't leak all you fluid.

It could also be a bearing issue in the front axle, they rarely go, however that would cause what you describe.

It is almost impossible for us to guess without seeing and hearing the exact noise and location.

Good luck, oh and Welcome to the board

I'm wondering if it could be a motor mount.

I'm wondering if it could be a motor mount.

but you said it is limited to speed right?

broken MM will give you a harmonic distortion more than a vibration. and you should only notice it on power transfer (torque to coast, or coast to torque)

The good news it is easy to check, but I don't think that is your problem. but hey I could be wrong.

Noise starts at about 5mph and even if your coasting in neutral it still makes a noise and you feel a slight vibration in the sterring wheel and gas pedal.

**UPDATE** well I just removed the front drive shaft and took it for a test drive. Same problem same noise!!!!!!! So tomorrow my last check will be the CV Joints I also heard that theres a bearing in the drive shaft that might also be making this noise.

Well if its not fixed by tomorrow then off to the dealer I go, so does my wallet!

Did you do both wheel bearings? Did the noise/vibration change any after doing them? Does the noise change going around a bend(either left or right) and moderate speed?

Sorry forgot to mention that i only replaced the drivers side wheel hub and bearings.

Removed the front drive shaft and still same noise

Yes I noticed today that when taking a left turn/bend on the highway its make more noise than driving straight or a right turn/bend.

Left turn puts pressure on the right wheel bearing and vice versa..Thats how you check for wheel bearing noise you kinda rock the vehicle... Also check for rust on the edges of rotors it can make quite a racket...

Just another thought. Usually a wheel bearing will make noise for many miles without ever causing a vibration. If its your right wheel bearing it must be shot...

Good luck

There's your problem. Right side wheel bearing.
