04 XLT
Hi everybody,

Im new to the forum and require some help, I've recently bought an 04 XLT with about 90k miles on it, and upuntil last night I thought she was great.

So, after about 100 miles of driving I get home, park up, and eat dinner.
1/2 hour later i go out to start her and for the first time she stumbles ( starts and stops). ok. I start her again and I hear a clacking sound that scared the crap out of me. sound like its coming from everywhere in the Engine compartment.

I bought a scanner and now I have
p0300 random misfires
p0301 misfire cylinder 1
p0303 misfire cylinder 3
p0316 misfire on start.

I did a search but there was nothing specific to all of these codes together. I would greatly appreciate any help you guys could give, ive gotta get this resolved by monday... Thanks all.

My guess is it's electrical - bad plugs, bad wires and/or bad coil. You didn't say if you had the V6 with a centralized coil or the V8 with coil on plug, but I would address this the same:

Pull and check the plugs on the misfire cylinders. If they look rank, replace all the plugs. Please remember to pull the plugs when the engine is cool, the aluminum head will thank you.

Next, check out the wires - look for breaks, burn marks, melted areas, etc.. Again, if they look bad replace them.

If you still have issues, try replacing the coil pack or the individual coils in the case of the V8.

sorry , its the 6 with central coil... i pulled plugs , so far nothing out of the ordinary. plugs lookm ok... how can i test the coil?

just a note, i forgot to mention that the engine cranks and starts... shes driveable ... but that clacking noise makes me nervous, i tested the resistance on the wires and they seem within range. plugs are ok too.

PLease someone point me in the right direction.
