I recently purchased a 2005 explorer 4.0 xlt with 85000. I have been trying to solve its rough idle and had the pcm updated earlier in the week. I know that the upgrade was supposed to fix some idling and shifting issues. So far I have not had any shifting issues in the 800 miles I've had it ........ until this weekend.
I was pulling a pop-up camper(1200 lbs) this weekend and the explorer popped/jerked three separate times on my trip. All three times I was pulling a hill with the rpm's around 2500. The first two times was worse than the last. The last time was barley noticable. Its difficult to explain what it did. It made a single clunkining noise and you felt a jerk like it stopped pulling for a split second. Overdrive was off and I wasn't running it hard. Could this be related to the pcm upgrade( trying to relearn shifting patterns) or does this sound like a deeper issue? I thought with all the knowledge and experience you guys have, maybe someone here has experienced this before and can shed some light on this for me. Thanks in advance.
