2005 Ford Explorer XLT
I have a 2005 Explorer XLT with 58,000 miles on it. Yesterday it starting lurching and then speeding up without my using the gas peddle to increase the speed. Two lights came on, a small wrench on the left of the instrument panel and a message in the right side of the instrument panel that read "engine fail safe mode."
After making it home, I looked online and found it was probably a throttle problem, and that the entire throttle assembly would have to be replaced, at a cost between $800-1200.
I am very upset with this, as this is a very dangerous problem that has happened to others. It is similar (if not the same) problem the Toyotas had last year that led to a massive recall after people were injured or died.
Does anyone know if Ford is doing anything about this issue? Is there compensation for this repair? I have never received any recall information on the vehicle, and I purchased it new and have been the only owner. If anyone has any info for me, I would greatly appreciate your sharing it. Thank you for your time in reading this.

I doubt you will have to replace the whole assembly, and I doubt its a widespread issue like Toyota. Any codes?

I've never had an issue with my truck's throttle.

not the same, your safety system worked. The truck/PCM detected something wrong and put it in "engine fail safe mode". Toy's don't' they just keep running. The usual symptom of the failed throttle body, is it will start but not go anywhere. . .
