I got an 05 explorer 4x4 with the advance trac. Had a real bad storm here in central missouri and started slipping on ice, my explorer kicked 4x4 high lot on and made a loud thump. Now I don't have Drive, but i still have reverse, 1,2, and 3 go some but start slipping. Any ideas?

*It acts like its in neutral with no rev limiter and a really bad scent of burning wire!

Been There Done That!

Tranny on my 05 4.0 went out on a long drive from LA to Arizona. Only had 38K miles. Ford rebuilt the whole thing- put in new servos...the whole nine yards!

It's working great now at 60K- quiet and smooth shifts.

Good Luck!

sounds like the tranny took a dump, . .same thing happen to ours.
From the sounds of it a band broke or it could also be one of the servos that went. Servos might be fixable, someone just had a write up in the trans section where it was just the servo. However if its an internal, like the bands its going to need to be rebuilt or replaced with a reman.

I had a guy a ford mechanic who's been in the dealership for over 30 years tell me it could be as simple as a plugged flilter if the transmission has never been serviced, which i have no clue of. But what he didnt understand is how reverse works fine, no slipping, doesnt jerk into gear at all, but yet 1,2 and D slip bad. Very weird though that 3rd would get up and move fine. He said something about a pump also. Any idears?
