HELP!! HELP!!! HELP!!!! My 06 limited V8 4X4 makes a bad bad clunk when shifting out of park into drive and the same thing when shifting into reverse. the check engine light is on and when I try to accelerate it feels like I have the brakes applied, it just stalls up the converter, (like when your power braking) and I cant go any faster than 2-3 MPH. I was out of town and my wife was driving when all this started, and only being a few miles from the house she limped it in, and parked it until I could take a look at it. she explained the problem was like if you were doing neutral drops (when you rev the motor to 4 or 5 thousand rpm in neutral and slam it into drive) she said that was the only way it would move. when I finally got home a week later I could'nt even get the peace of S#*t out of the driveway. I'm ready to drop the transmission today (10/13/2012) so if anyone thinks it could be a In-Frame fix please let me know ASAP I have got to get'r back on the road by next weekend. Thanks All

HEEEEEEELP!!! Does anyone have a clue?? Servo's, magnetic pickup sensors, torque converter, Pump, transfer case binding?? I probably have the rare case scenario, just my luck. If you have a friend that knows about ford tranny's I could really use the help before I drop this big chunk of metal out from under my X, working on the floor, no lift. THANKS YA'LL.

Have you pulled the codes yet?

Just a thought that the parking brake may have a problem. The brake shoes are located inside the rotor center drum. It is not uncommon for the pad material to detach from the shoes and jam the drum. There may be other problems in there too.

I think I would be jacking up the rear wheels off the ground and turning one wheel and ensuring the other side's wheel was turning (in the opposite direction unless you have limited slip or locker differential). Then put the trans in neutral and ensure the driveshaft can turn to eliminate a problem with the rear differential.

I would do the same to the front wheels to ensure the brakes are not stuck on or the front differential is OK.

Since the trans takes a load and transfers it to the transfer case due to the clunks and solid feel then perhaps the problem is in the transfer case. Do you have oil in the transfer case (fill plug and drain plug make it easy)? It takes Mercon but that has been replaced by Mercon V that is now compatible for mixing with Mercon. If you cannot turn the driveshaft with the rear wheels off the ground and the trans in neutral and the diff is OK (may need to disconnect the drive shaft from the diff for that) then the transfer case may be losing a bearing or chain problem.

Good luck.

Critical information I neglected to mention in my original post. I did run a scan, and got a U0101 "Lost Communication With TCM" also the wrench is light up on the in-dash diagnostic display screen, and the traction control light is on. I cleared the DTC and the wrench is still displayed, and the traction control light is still on. I'm pretty sure the PCM has the vehicle in some sort of Safe mode, because even with vehicle in park the engine performance reminds me of a 1980 chevette. Engine feels like it is missing on a few cylinders when I rev it up and it revs up about as slow as a chevette. while the vehicle was parked I ran the engine for twenty minutes or so to see if the check engine light would come back on,and it did not. Yet I ran a scan again and still got the "U" code. A few months ago before all this happened I pulled into a gas station, got gas, and when I went to pull off I noticed the traction control light was on. I turned the vehicle on and off several time trying to reset the light and had no luck, so when I went to pull off the vehicle wouldn't hardly move like the brakes were being applied 50% (mainly to the front brakes), so I gassed on it pretty hard and made it out onto a 4 lane road and then it was like the brakes were applied 98%(mainly to the front brakes) I could here a grinding sound in the front brakes like the pads were down to metal, I thought maybe a pad came half way out of the caliper and was stuck against the rotor. I put the peddle to the floor and it would not move at all. I put it in 4LOW and had to put'r to the floor to move at 1mile a hour. I pulled back into the gas station(thank god for two entrances) gave everything a visual inspection(no brake pads out of the calipers no wheel bearings excessively hot) I went to back into a parking spot and it moved pretty good in reveres(like only 25% braked applied) tried moving back forward and it was 5% better or so, I repeated the revers forward process 4 or 5 times and finally she freed up. I turned the ignition off and restarted and the traction control light was off. when I got home pulled off the wheels and the front inside brake pads looked pretty bad so I figured one of them must have been lodged and I couldn't see it earlier, and the backing up and pulling forward must have dislodged the pad. replaced the pads all the way around and had no problems until now. I'm just wondering if that was the beginning of this new issue, it kinda feels the same, but I didn't get the wrench light the first time, and the engine didn't go into safe mode. HMMM.. anyone ever had a TCM go bad???

Yes, but not on my Explorer. When the TCM went bad, it blew a fuse that controls the ECM. I got the U1000 code. The engine would start but ran like in "limp' mode. Replaced the fuse and the TCM and all is fine.

Since it was on a brand N, I will let the pros with the Explorers chime in.

Just in case, did you check the trans fluid level? That behavior mimics (minus the computer codes) happened on my '86 Cougar XR7 when the transmission lost its fluid.
