- 2007 Eddie Bauer 4.0L 2WD
The transmission started slipping in my '07 Eddie Bauer earlier today (4.0L, 2WD). I was driving at about 60mph on a 2-lane highway where it the road is perfectly flat for almost a mile followed by a steep grade for 1/4-mile or so. The transmission was in O/D (5th gear) as I started up the grade and I slightly increased pressure on the throttle to maintain momentum (as I always do). Instead of downshifting (or coming out of 'lockup'), the transmission slipped and I felt a shudder as the revs climbed but the wheels got no power!!! I removed my foot from the gas pedal, waited about 10 seconds, then tried again with the same slipping/shuddering/revving result....not a good way to end my weekend, or any day for that matter!
At that point, I pressed the button on the shifter to turn O/D off. With O/D deactivated, I drove it another 10 miles to my house (including climbing two grades much steeper than the one where it slipped) without any problems. In 4th gear, it performed perfectly and shifted thru gears 1-4 just as smoothly and quickly as it always does....a good sign, I hope!
My Explorer has 109,000 miles on it, which is very high for a 2007 model. But the first 72,000 miles were all on the highway (in only 15 months). I bought the car from my best friend with 72k on it and it was still rolling on the original OEM tires...which lasted almost to 85k miles! Those miles were definitely of the 'gentle' variety, 95% were on the interstate with the cruise set on 75mph....
The Maintenance Schedule in the Owner's Manual doesn't show a transmission fluid and filter change until 150,000 miles! It has never had a fluid/filter change since it only has 109k miles so far....
Any insight into what the problem could be would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
