Hello All,

New here to the site with a power loss issue.

My 07 Explorer 4.0 with 92K has performed well for the last 4 months since I bought it.
A few days ago I was pulling a boat and I think the trans went to downshift and it totally lost power, the "wrench" dummy light comes on and the engine will only idle. I can turn off the truck and restart and all is well.
It also happened when I was in cruise control and gave it gas and again it lost power. (seems to happen when it wants to downshift for more power.
Took it to the local auto parts store and no codes come up...on the diagnostic reader.

Help!!!!!!

Thanks, Erock61

you may need to get it to a ford dealer to read the ECU as the generic scanner at the auto parts store won't tell you everything.

It sounds like the truck is going into limp mode, and then shutting it off and restarting resolves it. When you were towing and it downshifted, and when you hit the gas with cruise control, both times you were actuating the throttle and thus the throttle position sensor. Ford has a bad history with TPS's (going all the way back to the SN95 mustangs) so that's where I'd start my troubleshooting without having ford read the ECU for faults.

Yep

Better scanner is step # 1

Ok, so there is more to the story.....

When my truck went into the "Limp" mode the Wrench dummy light went on.
Reading thru the owners manual it says, "Powertrain Malfunction Indicator".....

Now what..Take it to a trans shop...?

Could it be just another sensor...?

Thanks

Not gonna know until you have Ford read the stored codes.
