I have been reading the posts here and thinking about buying a better system for quite a while. I want a lot of bass in my explorer but don't want to spend too much money. I was hoping to stay under $400, but I don't think that's going to happen, so I'm willing to pay a little more if necessary. Right now, I'm leaning toward the JL 10" Stealthbox (to save space) with an Audiobahn Ultra Excursion sub (AW1005X).

Please let me know how you think this setup will work, and recommend a good amp to go with it. I WILL GREATLY APPRECIATE ALL INPUT. Thanks.

if the audiobahn fits (i dont think it will, because it has a huge magnet) it will work since it doesnt require much airspace. but it wont perform to it's potential. if you mount the sub in a larger enclosure you will get tons of bass (it will outperform most 12" and 15" subs). the perfect amp for that subwoofer is the Audiobahn A275HCX.

i just wanted to add that the AW1205X is only a little more money. the 12" has a higher sensitivity and handles 1000watts rms compared to the 10" that handles 900 watts rms. and the 12 will hit lower frequencies.

but the AW1005X is still a great sub.

Thanks leenjen. If the 10 will fit in the stealthbox, then I will probably use it. Otherwise, I'll might get the 12.

Does anyone know for sure if that 10" sub, will fit in the jl stealthbox? What would be a good sub to use in that box if it doesn't fit?

i think JL's best sub is the W3 series but it wont fit either. the W6 is a pretty good JL sub too, and it will fit.
but like i said before, you wont get any booming bass from a stealthbox. you need airspace to make bass, and the stealthbox is only 0.9 cubic feet.

the audiobahn 1005X or 1205X is a better choice than the JL subs anyway. higher power handling, higher spl, and better sq = amazing bass.

I think you'll need a sub with less than 5.5" of mounting depth at least. That's not including the approx. 1" you'll require of space between the magnet and the box itself.

why is everyone such an audiobahn fan? it blows my mind

probably because they make some of the best subs and amps.

thanks for the info, leenjen and JTang

i'll keep thinking about it

Actually, the airspace in the Stealthbox is .6 cu ft, not .9. I had a custom box made for my new a/d/s/ sub to fit where the Stealthbox was, and utilizing every last available cubic millimeter back there I was able to squeeze out just under 1.0 cu.ft. net volume (w/o the sub in there).

peace

Mike

thanks mike. i thought it was .9, but .6 does sound more like it.

anyway, that means less airspace ( = less bass ouput).

I have a JL Vantage box in my 96 X and it friggen booms, i had 2 eclipse 12's running off a CFA602, then they got stolen, so i took the insurance money and got the vantage box, the installers told me that they could put a W3 in there by cutting out the back and remolding it. So i said Heck Yeah, and i love it, it hits really hard, and fast i might add, but it just feels like somethings missing. Overall, i'm happy

oh yeah the 10W3 is running on a Punch 250,

if i could swap an audiobahn 10, i would do it, but that sub is monsterous in comparison to the w3

audiobahn would be awesome if they came out with a 40 inch sub

wtf?

what are you talking about? would be awesome? they are. who the **** needs a 40" sub anyway? besides they already have a 34" titanium subwoofer.

kove audio

Has anybody heard of Kove audio? There armageddon series are awesome,I have three kove armageddons, and a kenwood excelon amp 1200 watt mono block amp.The bass in unreal.kicks jl's ass

kove is pretty good too. i like the Armageddon U series. which armageddon do you have? they are great for SPL

kove audio

i have the z series they kick ass. Thanks for the reply leenjen

34", 40" sub??? What car would that fit in??? The box would be something like 120 cubic feet, with 15" ports. you'd need a FedEX truck or maybe even a school bus for one of those. I've seen some of the really big subs and they really don't sound good. They can't even get really good SPL. A 15" is the size for SPL, 12" for SQ/SPL and 10" is absolutely the perfect size for amazing SQ. Nice tight, quick bass. And the best ones can hit good SPL too.

There is no way that audiobahn sub would fit it there. It would be much happier in a larger sealed enclosure.

By the way the European model of the AW1000 is on sale at www.thezeb.com for like $80. You won't get more sound for that price from any other woofer. Give it around 700 watts (even less is okay) and you'll have serious bang for the buck.

those ultra excursion series subs are awesome! i got the 1205x powered by the a275hcx amp, and it is encrideble. unfortunaly i think it is too deep to fit into a stealth box, but if you could squeeze it in it would surprise everyone who saw it was just one ten. with my setup i went to pick up my freind and when he came down, he said that the copy machines on the 5th floor were rattling. everybody who has heard mine is like "what!? thats only one 12?" i hope you can fit it in there man, it would be a really clean and loud setup
