Ok so heres the deal. Start it and it idles fine, back out of the driveway and put it in drive. Sometimes its fine for a few minutes, most of the time it just dies. Restart it. Starts up like a new car and then dies. Restart it, same thing. Starts up perfect and then dies. Seems like it could be fuel related. The smell of fuel is there and sometimes it even smells flooded.

Replaced

Mass airflow sensor
Throttle position sensor
Idle air control valve
fuel pressure regulator
New coil and wires
New plugs
All vacuum lines seem to be working properly

I have searched for days and I cant seem to find out what the deal is. It drove fine a week ago, but it has done this before and then the next day it was fine. Maybe the O2 sensor or the fuel filter? Im just stumped and I need to drive this thing tomorrow. Any help?

fuel filter or fuel pump.

Yip! Sounds like a fuel pressure problem

Welcome to this forum! Check the engine coolant temperature sensor. This chart is in # 25 in my list of useful threads:

I would probably start by pulling codes (not all faults trigger the CEL to come on, especially when the fault causes it to stall) and checking fuel pressure.

maybee catalytic converters good luck

i still say fuel pressure due to the pump or filter

You can keep the $10 and add $10 to it... My guess is that you have a fuel leak and a sensor is shutting down the ignition due to faulty, leaky or failing fuel injectors. There is no charge for service here, but it sounds like a bet... so if I'm correct, the $20.00 makes your name appear red here

Donner, so where should I start looking?

I'm not a tech, but if you smell fuel when you start up, the smell maybe coming through the vents or glove compartment. Are you able to change your own fuel injector(s)?

Also, have someone start the engine with the hood up while you do a visual and smell for fuel - but stand back... I will make a quick call, and be right back.

Yep, definitely fuel related. Since it starts fine, and you smell fuel, I am betting it's the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail (can possibly be borrowed from some place the loans tools like autozone) and see what the pressure is. It should be around 40 or so psi. If it goes up to like 60, than that is your problem.

pm coming your way

Skip the pm... Fuel injector(s) need inspection.

I would say if it runs fine when it does run, the fuel injectors are fine. It's possible that one is leaking, but it would still run (ask me how I know). Of course, it should run fine with a bad FPR, too, but sometimes they don't. I've had a lot of fuel problems on my '94, and none of them would make it stop running. This included having a dead fuel injector for about 6 months. It also had 0 - yes 0 - fuel pressure and ran, it had a clogged fuel pump. Not sure if any of this helps, but check everything, and something should turn out bad. Would also help to get the codes pulled.

He already replaced the fuel pressure regulator as stated in the first post. The engine coolant temperature sensor has been known to cause mixture irregularities if it's out of calibration. Check the chart in post # 4. You will have to use an Ohmmeter on the sensor, and compare it to the coolant temperature.

No way, jose... the system doesn't know it's leaking... quite the opposite... If it's leaking, it's won't know to shut anything off.

If it smells like fuel when it cranks, it's either not getting spark, or not getting it at the proper time. It wouldn't start in the first place, and dropping it into drive wouldn't suddenly cause a leak to start or stop.

My money'd be on the fuel filter first.... It's cheap and simple to change, and can cause the issues, but I'm still leaning towards something electronic, and a temp sensor would also make sense.... If it thinks the engine's cold when it's really hot (or getting there), it could be flooding it out. The ECU is a dumb box... garbage in = garbage out.

Check the temp sensor resistances.... I think you'll find the culprit there.

Since all of these guys are leaning on fuel related... I'm going with the longshot at 43:1 odds and say is a bad coil wire or coil pack going bad. Good Luck on the fix and hope it isn't costly.
